school calendar, filipino style
By LucasMaya
i thought that this would be just like some of the typical school-setting stories one can read in wattpad or elsewhere. for starters, the setting of the story is in fictional schools in the Philippines. pre-adolescent and adolescent scenarios mixed with the usual school activities for the whole school year made the cuisine of this novel. the filipino values (like the kissing of the elders' hands/mano po) are also mentioned here. also tackled (and a bit cliched in some stories or by the media) is the hate-love relationship of the protagonists and the age difference between them. while most stories delve on the forbidden acts with regards to the characters, this one is different. as such, the author wanted to maintain the dignity of the characters by letting them be highschoolers and not act like those who are in dire need of the wants of the flesh. the last few chapters dealt with how the characters ( justin and ashley) managed to sort out their feelings for each other. as they were still students, both deemed it right to focus on studies first than being in the relationship. this stream of thought is ideal, as practically speaking, in the Philippines, one has to study first to finish schooling. work and relationship follow. this psyche is etched in mind even by the forefathers. sad to say that teenagers nowadays tend to follow their heart than use their brains. for justin and ashley, they decided to focus on themselves first as time changes a person's outlook in life after graduation. i also liked how justin still felt the same way for ashley after she became chubby. it showed justin's maturity in dealing with the cliche that 'you should not judge a book by it's cover'. it goes to show too that for justin, the appearance of the person is not important when he is in love. worth mentioning too is the love story between mr udagawa and ms alcasid. i had no clear grasp of the characters' appearances at first (and how they acted). i had always imagined hayami mokomichi and nakama yukie in them. as the story progresses, it was noted that mr udagawa ad fair skin and looks like song joong ki. (the author is a jpop/jdorama/kpop/kdrama addict). to sum up these two other characters, their story paralleled with justin and ashley's with regards to the age difference culprit. another aspect of the novel is the presence of inter-school rivalry with regards to intelligence, beauty, reputation and flamboyance. i personally had witnessed this kind because my school was a rival to another catholic all-girls' school. this rivalry doesnt solve matters, especially when the rivals attend the same college together and become friends. to review, the book may be mediocre, but it gave me something to read and expect the next chapter basically because the last chapter was hanging and you need to update yourself. it's just like anticipating the next episode of your favorite tv drama

An original coming-of-age novel
By Rohi Shetty
Ryanne Salve is a young writer with lots of potential. What I liked best about her novel, "She's Older Than Me" is that she dares to be different. Instead of the conventional novel, she has written a story with an unconventional protagonist and his unlikely romantic interest. The ending is also not what I expected. I won't say any more to avoid giving away too much of the story.

Ryanne has some interesting chapter titles so it would be good to include a table of contents and also an author bio, including links to her other books.

I'm looking forward to her next book.

(Full disclosure: I received a free copy of this book from Story Cartel in return for an honest review.)

I fave this rating for this book as five stars for such a great story for young teens and perhaps also the older ones, too!
because of the the thoughtfulness of how they and what you're having to deal with now. It seems to be a very clean type of story, too! There really was not anything bad to say about this author's work as far as I am concerned. Great
