Dated But Still Quite Valuable

This thorough book, though 14 years old soon, is still an amazing review of CAS capabilities. Ostensibly, the book compares Axiom, Derive, Macsyma, Maple, Mathematica, MuPAD and Reduce-- all old versions. If that were it's main theme, it would not be worth the still steep price.
However, the whole premise of "comparing systems," as if the book helps you decide which to use for various applications, is only a small part of the value. The real meat is over 400 pages of formulas, applications, techniques, tips, hints, underlying logic, and much more, that is completely timeless and as relevant today as in '99-- or 70-00 in the case of the substantive bibliography.
Covered are: Square roots, Chebyshev Polynomials, Determinants, Generating Functions, Series, Polynomial/ODE and PDE equations, Limits, Analysis, Integration, CAS in Education, Group Theory, Tensors, Algebraic Geometry, and much more. Even in 2013, there are few books published that give not just comparisons and applications, but the underlying algorithms for CAS implementation. Cohen's 2 title series from 2002 are two of the only that do so after Wester: 1. Computer Algebra and Symbolic Computation: Mathematical Methods and 2. Computer Algebra and Symbolic Computation: Elementary Algorithms.
