The perfect book for type-A *and* type-B parents
By Kelly Holmes
As a parent, I'm kind of anti-schedule. I always hated being kept to a strict eating and sleeping schedule as a kid, and I think that's why I've always resisted putting my kids on schedules. My basic philosophy is: When you're hungry, you should eat. When you're tired, you should sleep.

After my third baby was born last year, I struggled to get into a groove, especially with the toddler and newborn and what they needed from me. When the newborn was ready for a nap, the toddler was demanding food, and vice versa. And so I went searching for help and came across this book. Given my philosophy on schedules for kids, I was reluctant to read this book.

But I'm so glad I did. This book gave me the straightforward, common-sense encouragement I needed in order to do what works best for my family. If you're worried this book will be all structure and rules, don't be. The whole idea of working with routines and rhythms is that you follow a basic flow for your day and don't stress about feeding the kids at 11:49 am instead of 11:35 am.

One of my favorite, favorite parts of the book is all the sample schedules! They really helped me see how my family can structure a typical day, and I still find myself referring back to the schedules every month or so as my youngest gets older and her needs change.

This book has become an invaluable parenting resource to this tired, overwhelmed mama. Highly recommended to all parents.

Great book, not the best quality.
By Kierra Theurer
This book is filled with great information regarding routines and schedules for babies aged 6 weeks and older. It also covers having multiple children. I particularly liked having examples for bedtime and mealtimes. Overall I feel like this book will be very useful both now and in the future. I have a five month old son who has been a great sleeper from the start but I felt like I needed more structures for wasn't sure where to start. This book breaks it down to the most simple form and doesn't over complicate the process. I love that! I will have to say the only reason it did not receive 5 stars was because the quality of how the book was made was not at all what I expected for the price. I don't know if it will hold up well after extensive use. It seems to be printed on fairly cheap paper and was oddly formatted and had a blurry cover page and back page, I could barely make out the bio information of the authors. I still plan on keeping this book and utilizing the information as my child continues to grow or we add to our family.

By Erin Camfield
I never imagined that I would be a parent that set a schedule for my children. However, after having a child with SPD and schedules kind of being a very important thing to help with all of our daily activities, I can honestly say that my children on a schedule are better behaved and happier than when we didn't use a schedule.

Whether you know that you want to have a schedule for your child(ren) or you have come to terms with the fact that it might help your child(ren), this book is definitely one for the bookshelf. Not only does it give you sample routine schedules, but they are specific for different ages. It also gives advice on managing the day with multiple children.

Cinema, by Alain Badiou

For Alain Badiou, films think, and it is the task of the philosopher to transcribe that thinking. What is the subject to which the film gives expressive form? This is the question that lies at the heart of Badiou’s account of cinema.

He contends that cinema is an art form that bears witness to the Other and renders human presence visible, thus testifying to the universal value of human existence and human freedom. Through the experience of viewing, the movement of thought that constitutes the film is passed on to the viewer, who thereby encounters an aspect of the world and its exaltation and vitality as well as its difficulty and complexity. Cinema is an impure art cannibalizing its times, the other arts, and people – a major art precisely because it is the locus of the indiscernibility between art and non-art. It is this, argues Badiou, that makes cinema the social and political art par excellence, the best indicator of our civilization, in the way that Greek tragedy, the coming-of-age novel and the operetta were in their respective eras.

From Publishers Weekly
The best of French philosopher Badiou's over 50 years' worth of writing on cinema is collected in this intriguing volume. It begins with an interview conducted by editor de Baecque in which Badiou considers the role of film in culture as a "school for everyone", his evolving relationship with the cinema, and the radical politics that often inform his work. His 1977 essay "Revisionist Cinema" lays out these politics, decrying the ideals of "new bourgeoisie" directors like Bergman and Kubrick. Badiou posits an "axiomatic" approach to film discussion in which we eschew judgment in favor of asking "how a particular film lets us travel with a particular idea in such a way that we might discover what nothing else could lead us to discover." Badiou describes film as "the seventh art", explaining how it interacts with other media, and provides brilliant, in-depth analyses on the techniques, styles, and themes of several films. His crucial essay is "Cinema as Philosophical Experimentation" in which he explores film as both a "mass art" and a subject worthy of serious philosophical thought. Badiou's writing style may be difficult to those unaccustomed to French philosophy, but the material is worth the effort. (June)

Review
"Fascinating ... every word of Badiou's writing radiates with a pronounced sense of exuberance for cinema, and presents the convincing case that it is the liveliest of the seven arts."
Film International

"Provides brilliant, in-depth analyses on the techniques, styles, and themes of several films."
Publishers Weekly

"The chance to truly and fully understand the nature of cinema through the eyes of someone who is clearly one of its most passionate advocates."
Morning Star

"Badiou’s unfashionable militancy is sure to continue to generate a degree of mock not-this-again head-scratching from the guardians of sober academic scholarship in the humanities, as well as from whoever might be assigned to review Badiou in say, The New York Review of Books."
Los Angeles Review of Books

"While a thorough reading of this book is an intellectual investment, I would highly recommend it, particularly to those interested in the pursuit of cultural renewal by artistic means."
Englewood Review of Books

"There is an aphoristic concision to Badiou's thinking that is capable of producing moments of true enlightenment."
Review 31

"These rich and diverse pieces are all ostensibly concerned with cinema, but are ultimately far more profound than often their occasion would demand. Providing an important exploration of politics, esthetics, the visible, and cinema's relation to thinking and procedures of decision, this volume gives the reader of Badiou a sense of this major thinker's intellectual development. Spitzer's translation of this volume is a careful and meticulous rendering of Badiou's thought."
Claire Colebrook, Penn State University

"Since the 1950s Badiou has written in excess of thirty essays on cinema. It is clear that film has been a constant companion in his articulation of art as a form of truth-making event, the creation of unworldly truths. This collection brings these writings together in English for the first time, allowing us to see just how important film is for Badiou’s philosophy of the event."

Set aside preconceptions, or read selectively
By Thomas F. Dillingham
Although there are some philosophically oriented English/American writers about movies, they tend not to be among those most recognized by anglophone movie fans. Some very fine writers--James Agee, Andrew Sarris, Pauline Kael, Dwight Macdonald, Murray Kempton, and many others--have produced readable and insight-filled commentaries on specific movies and the art form in general. It is uncommon, however, in English language writing about movies, to encounter the kind of complex and sometimes almost incomprehensible prose produced by the philosopher-critics of the French tradition.

Alain Badiou, as we are reminded in the introduction to this collection, has been writing about CINEMA for more than fifty years. This collection offers a number of fascinating, sometimes impossibly arcane, sometimes disappointingly boring, commentaries, usually about genres or directorial oeuvres more than about particular movies. In other words, though Badiou has strong opinions about the importance, indeed the deep relevance, of cinema to western culture, he is not a movie reviewer and does not bother with thumbs up or down, numbers of stars or popcorn tubs, and so on. As an unreconstructed (though somewhat reconfigured over the years) Marxist, his analyses tend to focus on what he considers the fundamental issues and orientation of the films he discusses, and he shows a strong preference for the kinds of politically oriented films that we associate with Jean-Luc Godard or, in Badiou's case, the surprising examples of the films of Jacques Tati. He strongly denigrates some of the most famous and revered French directors and their "quality" films, which he considers to be mummified museum pieces rather than living works of art.

For a reader willing to navigate the sometimes jargon-turgid prose, these essays are often rewarding. One major drawback for many American readers will be the frequent references to political activities and even politicians indigenous to France and the intricacies of French politics, as well as other distinctly parochial francophone interests. Some notes--not really copious enough for non-French readers--help to clarify some of those points, but a few essays are really worthless to us because of their arcane nature. I found, therefore, that reading selectively and being willing simply to skip ahead if an essay became too opaque, was the way to go with this. From that, I found enough of interest to make the book a worthwhile encounter.

Badiou on Cinema: a collection of essays from across his career
By Pen Name?
As a reader of continental philosophy, I recall the emergence of English translations of Badiou's work about a decade ago, preceded by the praise and references of Slavoj Zizek. I was curious at least to check out the work of this thinker, though for the most part I have found his writings to be tangential or at odds with my own research interests. But, I do like to keep up from time to time with the work of anyone so prominent in the field, particularly when it comes to work on the arts and culture.

It seems like a lot of modern French philosophers eventually publish a volume on cinema, and so here we have Alain Badiou collecting some of his own writings on cinema, from essays published and previously unpublished. These essays span his whole career, which is interesting in itself. One work even dates as far back as 1957 when Badiou was a student. The volume was originally published in France in 2010 and features both an essay on Clint Eastwood from that year and a new 20 page interview to start the volume which deals with his interest in cinema and engages with the circumstances of some of his writings. This interview itself may be the biggest draw for some readers as it gives a direct look into how Badiou understands his own ideas opening up in relation to cinematic culture and experience.

Like the essay collection "Infinite Thought," this volume may provide a nice entry way into Badiou's thinking, particularly for those who are already versed in film. It's certainly more approachable than say... Being and Event.

the seventh art
By Case Quarter
antoine de baecque, by assembling all of alain badiou's published writings, plus two unpublished essays, lectures, and a couple of interviews, on cinema, has done not just badiou, but the reader, a service.

the book's strength relies on badiou's developing and continuous thought from essay to essay. the essays are arranged in chronological order. over the years we are privileged seeing how badiou developed his ideas on cinema, starting in 1957. badiou was a twenty year old student, spending his free time at a movie theater near his school, watching french and american films from the 1920s. his first film essay, CINEMATIC CULTURE, was published in vin nouveau. in that essay he discussed film as technique and as influenced, writing on scene, the shot, the frame, and adding his opinions on intuition, language and taste. `cinema,' he would later say, `is the art of the perpetual past ... to speak of film is always to speak of a reminiscence ...'

fast forward 20 years, ten years after the events in france during may 1968 finds badiou critiquing the events and cinema from a political perspective. badiou is a maoist. his first of several pieces for la feuille foudre, the journal for a marxist-leninist intervention in cinema and culture, is REVISIONIST CINEMA, a manifesto pooh-poohing counter revolutionary art.

fortunately, for the reader, the 1980s have him distancing art from politics, and this is where his ideas start to get interesting. goddard becomes a focal point for him. badiou discusses goddard's techniques and his method of situating the political and human connection. badiou's distancing of the political is not a relinquishment of politics, he's very clear about the difference. in a film critique from this period he discussed paul nizan, a good friend of jean paul sartre, mentioned by sartre in a lengthy biographical sketch in sartre's SITUATIONS.

the 1990s and into the 21st century show him as the philosopher working through questions of how film connects to reality. he uses plato's images within the cave to discuss the first MATRIX film. he equates the ancient greek audience at the tragedy plays with the filmgoer since the 1900s, finding both audiences engaged in popular entertainment of their time. cinema is a mass art, enjoyed in its immediacy by millions, offering a democratic appeal which no other art form has ever matched. one reason, unlike the other seven categories of art, `film is an impurity that can only be purified by the admixture of the Beautiful,' with american cinema being `unquestionably one of the greatest artistic creations of the century,' the tension and the character, that is, the hero, in the epic, who against impossible odds, car chases and explosions, always triumphs, a scenario that rarely happens in european film. a couple of other american films discussed are MAGNOLIA and clint eastwood's A PERFECT WORLD. reading badiou's enthusiasm for american cinema, i wonder what he thinks of weekly american tv dramas.

there is also his TRIBUTE TO GILLES DELEUZE, a description of the deleuze's books CINEMA 1 and CINEMA 2, in which badiou ponders time in philosophy and cinema, speculating how cinema will change the way philosophy is conducted.

there are several films, which i have not seen and intend to see, and films i have seen at which, thanks to badiou, i will take another look.

Disappointing Detour
By Caroljane
When the first book finished, it looked like there was going to be a voyage to find the home world of the ship, The Wanderer.

The second book starts (spoiler alert) with many reasons why a direct voyage to the Wanderer's home cannot be made. So, while there is plenty of action, this book isn't quite as stand-alone a book as the Escape ... there is less character development of the characters and the ending seems to be simply a spot to stop... to start another adventure again.

I'd have rather had a longer book... with much more accomplished and done... with the ending accomplishing something... like actually getting the slaves and prisoners off the ships ... you know... the details?

While I really enjoyed the first book... I didn't enjoy this one as much. I'm still giving it a generous 4 stars... but it's really more a 3 star book.

And, because this one was so short... I'm now thinking that this story will be drawn out into many more books... just for more money, instead of actually telling the full story in a decent trilogy. I purchased the second book and was severely disappointed.
I did receive the first book at no cost... so splitting the cost over 2 books... isn't bad ... but really... I'm so disappointed and as much as I was enjoying the world and the story, I won't be purchasing any more of the books.

Still good for YA action ... not so good for science fictions fans. While I highly recommend the first book... don't be tricked into spending for this one and expecting the same quality. You'll be disappointed. I was.

somewhat lightweight, but sorta fun
By Kelly Howard
I had a tough time deciding between 3 & 4 stars on this one. I went with 4 because I enjoyed the first one enough to get the 2nd one, & the second has some elements that improve upon the first. I don't recap plots, so will just delineate the good 'n' bad. Overall, I'd call this brain candy --you just park your brain & ride along. It's a fluffy read; pretty much cotton candy for the brain, diverting but not so icky that you get mind cavities. Definitely not Great Literature or any challenge to the works of the Golden Age of SF. But sorta fun.

The good stuff:
The characters are generally engaging; they have their good & bad traits, & some of the less fortunate characteristics are products of being ill-treated, so are more forgivable. They grow & change over the course of the books. A new being is introduced in this book, a likeable alien. Also, other characters are introduced & the book is less claustrophobic than the first as the POV changes to some of these other characters, in situations on planets or other ships --it's not all just Jess & Co on the Wanderer, all the time.

The ship is interesting & just chock-full of nifty-spifty stuff. I thought it was interesting the way the ship 'melds' with Jess. (tho awfully darned handy at times...see below).

The depiction of slavery is realistically grim (tho whether it'd be economically feasible in an interstellar civilization, I have no idea). Makes the ex-slave characters more sympathetic....most of 'em.

The bad stuff:

The characters (& writing in general) seemed a bit too simplistic at times, as if the book was written for a YA audience. I assume it's not, given the amount of enthusiastic leaping into beds (& elsewhere) for sexual exploration that goes on between the two young'uns. It's not graphic sex, but i have a hard time seeing parents being overly keen on their teenagers reading about other teenagers dashing off to roil the sheets every time they get a free minute. So if it is a YA, the sexual elements are off; if it's not, other elements are off.

The ship is TOO nifty-spifty; whatever problem arises, the ship can fix. If it doesn't have a way to deal with a problem, it can grow/change/make all new weapons or abilities to deal with it. Many times it felt like a cheap plot cheat: a deus ex shipina instead of deus ex machina. It reminds me of one reason I hate magic/sorcery-type fantasy; if a big threat looms, just wave the magic wand. Here, Jess just waves the magic ship.

After having my blood pressure red-line regularly by horribly edited Kindle books full of grammatical & punctuation errors, it's nice to see this one doesn't have too many howlers. However, the author appears to've taken an interesting approach to those thorny questions of when to use that pesky possessive apostrophe and the its/it's dilemma, and whether to use a colon or semi-colon: he just avoids them altogether. There's almost a complete lack of any of the aforementioned punctuation marks. So there are still errors, but at least he's consistent, & commits a consistent sin of omission.

From Library Journal
This new edition of Zakin's basic pottery book has been completely rewritten, with new color photographs replacing the mostly black-and-white photos of the first edition. To quote Val M. Cushing's foreword, "a very good book has become an even better book." Zakin, a veteran potter and teacher, discusses all types of fired ceramics, including tiles and architectural pieces. There are several good chapters on glazes and other surface treatments. The numerous photos illustrate techniques and finished work by other artists. An excellent book for potters at all levels, this belongs in academic as well as public library collections.

Practicing the craft....
By Dianne Foster
Generally, I collect ceramics, I don't make them anymore. I was never very adept with the potting wheel where my projects too often became lost in space, but I used to make very nice ceramics. In the process of dabbling with molds, slip and glaze I wondered about other aspects of the craft and over the years I have read and studied the subject informally. This wonderful book is a valuable resource whether you are starting out and want to experiment with different clay projects or want to refresh your memory.
Zakin first explains the building blocks--ceramics-making materials (different combinations lead to different outcomes). He discusses types of clays, feldspars, frits, silica, and other modifying compounds. Ever notice when you hold a cup made from Kaolin (frequently called porcelain) filled with a hot fluid you don't burn your hand whereas the cute cup you bought at the local craft show made from a more porous clay does? Zakin provides a great deal of information about the attributes of clay including plasticity, durability, color, maturity absorption, texture, resistance to warping, and intended use. If you're making a mug, a quiche pan, or a vase (or buying one), you may want to consider these aspects.
Zakin provides the reader with much information about ceramic color, glazes, and mold-making (plenty of tips for success). I was fascinated with the sections discussing glaze making and testing, and kiln loading and firing including some nice photos of the raku process. Section 16 includes a succinct history of ceramics that covers various types generated over the ages (nicely illustrated and clearly written).
The appendices of the book continue the in-depth exploration of the process of ceramics making including ways to analyze your results. This is an informative and well illustrated book containing many examples of ceramics made by the author and other artists working in his field.

Top artists in the field are represented with lots of pictures and glaze recipes. Very well written and easy to understand.

Chapter 1
Location, Location, Location

Reginald Shawan Dupree, inmate number 65392, Camden County Jail, is definitely not liking the situation he has found himself in.

He shrugs as best he can, given that Slippery Williams’s two beefy fellow inmates have effectively strapped him in place, each man firmly grasping Reginald’s muscled arms, just about lifting his feet off the ground. He’s like a suicide-to-be up in his attic, precariously balancing tiptoe on the wobbling chair under the noose he’s secured to the rafters. Even though they are in an opened-door cell—this being tier community time—they are enjoying relative privacy. Ensured no doubt by some of Slippery’s other crew out on the tier, forcefully keeping any curious inmates at bay.

Reginald is called Reginald only by his grandmother. To the rest of the world—which for him consists of a narrow slice of southern New Jersey—he’s known by his street name: Chink.

Chink’s never had the pleasure of actually meeting his biological father. His mother, dead now maybe three years, was eventually discovered in the abandoned and condemned building that was her home away from home, with the overdosing needle still stuck in her rigor mortised, track-marked arm. She earned her livelihood by sucking and fucking anyone having the price of admission.

Chink is an exceedingly good-looking guy. The penis-wielding side of his DNA design was clearly Asian, most likely Chinese. So, there’s the street name. Chink. Political correctness not being a feature of the thug life.

Chink is milk-coffee complected, well built, thanks to years of in-and-out incarceration providing near-unfettered use of the prisoners’ weight room. One of the few perks of doing serious time. He sports the requisite gang tattoos. Wears his African hair in tight, short braids. But it’s his mix of Oriental features with what was once his mother’s striking beauty that makes Chink a standout. Asian wedged green eyes, high forehead, thinnish nose.

“Ain’t no thing,” Chink repeats to Slippery Williams, like maybe he didn’t get it the first time he said it when they came in here. Soon as they grabbed him. Showing Slippery he’s cool with whatever.

These men do not speak in sentences; their well-worn street phrases have all the meaning needed to convey their intent.

Slippery Williams has heard Chink. Knows exactly what he’s saying.

Let’s forget about the whole thing. My mistake. That’s what Chink is saying.

The Camden County Jail is overcrowded. Seems like it’s been that way since forever. And like all jails, the place reeks of stale urine, male sweat, excessive testosterone. Day and night an asylumlike rumbling and shrieking bounces from cement wall to cement wall; diminished in volume for only an hour or two sometime near dawn.

Other inmates can be heard from where Chink is being uncomfortably detained.

“Motherfucker, motherfucker, motherfucker,” someone is rapid-fire shouting. Without question, the most frequently used word in the prisoners’ lexicon.

“Fuck you, you pussy-assed bitch,” someone else can be heard shouting above the ever-present din, no one giving any thought to how that makes no sense at all.

Hard metal gates clank. The occasional guard can be heard ordering some inmate to “stand down, stand down.”

But right now, in this open, lonely cell, Chink is doing his best to alleviate what he has no trouble seeing as a bad situation.

It was a coincidence, a real fortuity, Chink at first decided, when he was transferred here from the also pitifully overcrowded neighboring Atlantic County Justice Facility.

Camden County claims ownership to the worn-down city of Camden, but Atlantic County has the rejuvenated jewel of Atlantic City in its tattered crown. And Chink is, and has been, the drug kingpin of Atlantic City.

On paper, Chink looks to be more successful, and better positioned, than Slippery Williams, who has quietly held the reigns of power over Camden’s flourishing drug markets longer than any of his predecessors, each and every one of whom is either doing life with no parole or is dead with bullet holes in his rotting corpse.

But appearances can be deceiving. Chink has to answer to Atlantic City’s organized crime syndicate. Guys mostly from New York and Vegas. Law enforcement may have weakened its hold over the years, but a mere street thug like Chink is no match for them. He’s an indentured servant who has been allowed to plow the land. The land in this instance being the street corners of his town and the boardwalk hotels when a guest has made inquiry of the bellman where he/she might score a little something to make their stay a bit more exciting.

So while Chink’s gross revenues may be higher than Slippery’s, his take-home pay is considerably smaller. And that’s why he at first found his transfer to the Camden County Jail so fortuitous.

It gave him an opening to seek a liaison with Slippery. A high-level parley of two street-corner CEOs. His stated intention: to explore some sort of fee-sharing partnership arrangement. A combination of crews and drug distributions. A pursuit of the economies of scale.

Naturally, Chink saw no need to mention how big a slice the uptown boys have been helping themselves to of his operation. Nor how, if he could only get inside Slippery’s network, with a minimum of time, he would be able to “dispense” with Slippery altogether. Chink naively fancying himself the Donald Trump of the New Jersey drug trade. Where “You’re fired!” is communicated in lead.

So they met. Over dinner, so to speak.

Because of woeful overcrowding most inmates were forced to eat their meals in their cells, on paper plates and with plastic utensils carefully collected and inventoried after each meal. In an apparent random selection, due to diminished mess hall seating space, only a portion of the inmates got to eat at tables.

The tables in question are several rows of six-seaters, the stools on either side bolted to the cement floor.

For all intents and purposes Slippery Williams owns the Camden County Jail. His crew is dominant over any other incarcerated grouping: black, white, or Latino. Doesn’t matter. Not all the guards are on his payroll. Just enough to ensure his creature comforts, such as they are. So, Slippery eats in the mess hall.

Eventually he and Chink had their meet, each seated opposite the other at Slippery’s regular table. Each had been allotted three gang members—one seated on either side at the table, and the third on his feet behind. They had spoken as they ate, like all proficient businessmen and -women do.

“So, like I’m sayin’,” Chink had said, carefully chewing the stringy mystery meat he had fished out of the oily liquid in his bowl. “They no stopping us, we combinin’ like I’m sayin’. Know what I’m sayin’?”

Slippery Williams is a man of few words. He’s doing what’s called wait-and-see time. His first criminal trial ended with a hung jury. The judge called a mistrial. The Camden DA can’t decide whether or not to risk a retrial and a possible acquittal. That would be bad for his long-term elective office ambitions. So Slippery continues to reside in the Camden County Jail, marking time.

Chink, on the other hand, is actually doing time. Though not all that much. He cut a deal on his latest case, since the evidence of felony conspiracy drug distribution was painfully thin. So he copped to yet another simple possession. With his priors he got a year and a day. Then came the nonsensical transfer from one overcrowded jail to another.

Slippery sips from the tepid, watered-down coffee, replaces the cup on his mess hall tray. He simply nods at Chink seated across from him, knowing there’s no stopping this boy from motormouthing his way through his proposal. As Chink resumes his pitch, Slippery simply nods what could reasonably be taken for assent.

To an outsider, Slippery is just another thirty-something ghetto rat. He’s thin, medium dark, standard facial features. Not one outstanding characteristic. An inner-city African-American Everyman. But his intellect is aflame. Given different circumstances of birth, the world could have been his oyster.

“Yeah,” Chink had said, gently thrusting his close-fisted arm across the table for a consent bump from Slippery. Slippery complied, but remained otherwise mum.

“All right, then,” Chink had said, motioning to the two guys flanking him that this powwow was at an end. A tacit agreement in principle had been reached. He had lifted himself off the bolted stool, nodded at Slippery, told him, “Later, my brother,” and walked off toward his tier. Chink silently assuring himself it won’t take six months and he’ll have Slippery dead.

Slippery watched him go, his plan already formulated.

Chink knows there is no real point in struggling with the two giants who have him pinned in this cell. Still he wrenches one arm this way, the other that way. The only result is that the grip on his arms is tightened. He tries looking past the cell bars. His crew should be out there. Why aren’t they here? Chink listens for the sounds of bodies bumping bodies, threats shouted as the two crews confront each other out there. But all Chink can hear is the ever-present jailhouse drone.

Several days ago, Slippery had privately cornered Chink’s main lieutenant. He wasn’t hard to single out. Seated in another quiet cell, on side-by-side bottom bunks, he and Slippery had a heart-to-heart. Explaining the facts of life. Succinctly conveying how Chink was in a really bad place. A place he’d unfortunately put himself in.

Slippery gave the lieutenant a choice. Not much of a choice, really. But the guy didn’t need long to see where things were headed. He accepted Slippery’s gracious offer (the other choice being a premature death), making the lieutenant the presumptive new crown prince of Atlantic City drug trafficking.

So, after Chink was first isolated and brought to the cell he now so unfortunately finds himself in, this guy and some of Chink’s other crew stood as near the open cell as Slippery’s men would permit. Chink’s other crew members waiting for the lieutenant to make his move. Their muscles already tensed in anticipation of the impending clash. Instead, they watched as the lieutenant simply turned and walked away. Those remaining at the line of scrimmage exchanged looks.

Then they got it and they too took off. So, Chink’s posse-to-the-rescue evaporated. He returns his attention to Slippery.

“Slip?” Chink says, the pleading in his voice clear as a bell.

Slippery stays eye to eye with him, until Chink can’t hold it any longer and looks away.

“Got to be,” Slippery finally says as Chink’s eyes shoot back to him.

“No, no,” Chink says. “Slip, lemme axe you …”

Chink never gets to finish his thought. Slippery brandishes the shank he’s been deftly holding behind his back. It’s a razor-sharp sliver from one of the mess hall trays that had worn and cracked to the point of having to be discarded. The guard who sold the shard had asked if any binding was needed for the handle. Slippery’s guy had said no, they had that covered.

Chink’s eyes saucer for the second or two he sees the shank materialize, his brain trying to catch up to the image his eyes have recorded. But Slippery is too fast as he surgically thrusts the shank directly into Chink’s windpipe.

Almost immediately, the two guys release Chink from their grasp. They and Slippery watch as Chink’s hands instinctively shoot to his neck. But he’s already in shock and so can’t get a hold of the shank, his hands violently tremoring. Chink’s head rolls back, he’s gurgling, now shoving himself from side to side as a pinkish flow of blood and saliva precedes the gushing of his blood down the front of his clothing. His eyes roll back in his head as he falls to the cell floor, still writhing, still gurgling.

It only takes a bit more time before Chink’s body gives out. Slippery waits until Chink has exhausted two or three violent body jerks and is then still before he exits the cell. His two men wait just a little while longer, simply to ensure no further cleanup action is warranted, and then they remove the shank and walk out.

Seeing the three file out from the cell, those few still standing nearby all make an orderly exit back to their own cells.

Lockdown is coming. Seconds from now the guards—including the shank seller—will make the discovery. Whistles will be blown, a siren sounded, and then will come the lockdown.

Slippery is already in his cell, on his bunk, reading his iPad. Devices such as these are definitely not permitted to inmates. On the occasions when cells are searched, Slippery hands the device off to a guard who will hold it until the all clear.

Years earlier, Slippery had trouble reading, having to sound out the words. But by now he’s become pretty proficient at it. Understanding the concepts, descriptions, and thoughts of the writers was far less difficult—almost second nature, once he acquired proficiency with the written word.

His iPad has e-mail capacity. But Slippery never uses it. Nothing he does is ever committed to writing. Today, he returns to Machiavelli’s The Prince. Days before, he read up on the book, using the Internet to take him to explanatory sites.

So the whistles are blaring, the siren has been sounded, and Slippery lies on his bunk reading.

Okay, so, here’s the thing: Slippery Williams is my client.

Mine and my law partner’s. Michael Mezzonatti. To just about everyone he’s Mickie. I’m Salvatore “Junne” Salerno. Junne morphed from Junior, my Camden neighborhood name.

Anyway, Slippery is, and has been, our client. You could say he’s our best and longest-standing client. (Okay, I just did.)

And me and Mickie actually like Slippery. Well, that’s an overstatement. It’s more a real-world kind of respect.

We understand Slippery. Can see his unrealized innate talents, how the circumstances of his birth have put him where he is. He’s unquestionably made a success of the hand he was dealt. And Slippery has always played it straight with us. He pays on time. Almost never asks us to do something we as lawyers shouldn’t do.

There is one little wrinkle involving a past client named Rodrigo Gonzlez, who’s dead. Me and Mickie are alive thanks to Slippery. But that’s another story.

Anyway, guys like Slippery are our stock-in-trade. It’s what we do. Mickie and me. And maybe except for Dumpy Brown, our biggest Camden legal competitor (a guy whose business card says “Black On Black Get You Back”), we are the street’s go-to lawyers.

What can I say?

But the problem now with Slippery isn’t Chink. Chink’s gone. History. Another unsolved jailhouse murder. Mickie and me will hear about what happened with Chink later, but it’s of no professional concern to us.

No, the problem is Slippery’s wait-and-see time.

That’s why tomorrow the jailers will escort him to the Camden County Courthouse.

Me and Mickie need to do something.

That’s what he pays us for.

Youse gotta read this...
By Quixote010
OK...so this ain't what you expected. I mean. How many authors write a book the way most people talk? Especially people from Jersey. Not that I'm dishin' people from Jersey, but all these short sentences and periods where you don't expect 'em could give you apoplexy or somethin.

But hey, what do I know? This book ain't about what I like. It's about two former east coast cops who go to night school and get law degrees to practice in Jersey. They're both Italian and both street smarts in lots of ways. Just because one is gay... but wait a minute, that ain't got nothin to do with this story so why bring it up?

Anyways, Mickie and Junne (that's our boys) are just tryin to do their business of keepin' street hustler Slippery Williams out of jail when a series of events leads 'em smack into a bigger fed case that they know nothin about involving Slippery and their low-life landlord and lower-life attorney Arty Bernstein. Mickie and Junne (otherwise known as Michael Messonatti and Salvatore Salerno for those of yous literates) have to rely on their street smarts to stay out of jail, or maybe the Hudson River, and all the while deal with their Italian families and personal issues.

Tell you what. If you want to be entertained with a story that'll make the corners of your mouth curl, get it. It ain't bad.

Don't Kill These Lawyers
By Lawrence J. Demaria
Jersey Law's protagonists, Mickie Mezzonatti and Junior "Junne" Salerno, two ex-cops turned Camden law partners, usually handle cases involving the dregs of society. Their current dreg is Slippery Williams, a brutal drug lord who in an earlier book saved their lives. They want to repay the favor by helping Slippery out of a jam with the Feds. But Slippery didn't get his nickname for nothing. He soon has Mickie and Junne involved in so many conspiracies and subplots that it appears likely that lose more than just a case or two. Their necks are on the line.

The ghetto talk sounds real, as do the crooked lawyers and immoral politicians who complicate our two heroes' lives. Much of the writing is very funny. The ending is a stretch, but strangely satisfying. Can't give away more.
Author Liebman, an attorney himself, manages to honor a pair of lawyers while savaging the profession. No mean trick, and neatly done.

A Great Read
By husli
The narrative of Jersey Law is seemingly very realistic, transporting us to a life and a place that we might just as soon avoid, but can't take our eyes or ears off it when a good story grabs us, like this one. The rhythm of the book takes hold and you ride it with a smile and more than a few "oohs." I thoroughly enjoyed it, and it is a wonderful sequel to the author's other entry, Death by Rodrigo, which was a great read as well.
