Not too good for self-study

I'm an 8th grader that wants to learn chemistry very badly, and bought this book.

Most of the book provides an adequate explanation for all the essential concepts encountered in a regular high school course. I know this because after reading this book, I looked at the state tests for a high school chemistry course, and I could do most of the problems. There are many examples in the book that help a student understand what the text is trying to explain. There are also a lot of practice problems after each section and chapter that reinforces the contents of the chapter/section very well.

However, without a teacher, if some concept is not clear, then chaos occurs. There are selected parts in the book that are vague in a way. To me, the noticable ambiguity in the text comes in the bonding chapter. They sort of assume that out of nowhere you can write an electron dot structure, a concept that other review chemistry texts take pages explaining. Hybridization was also explained poorly, and several weeks after I read that part (when I was finished with the book), I finally thought I got it, and then a chapter review problem proved that it was still a mystery. I have another chemistry book that I use to help me understand in case I don't get what's going on in this chemistry book.

Bonding isn't the only chapter that is a disaster in clarity (although it is the worst). The chapters from about 16-23 were all not as good as the other ones. There was also some guessing involved in the oragnic chemistry section, but that was not too bad; I still figured it out.

My school uses this textbook (as I found out months after I bought this book). With a teacher, this book is perfect, but without one, get ready to think; appreciate the pictures in there when you can, but focus a lot on figuring out the material.

Fairly Decent

This book is a decent chemistry book that does a good job in covering chemistry material. Although there are not enough example problems in the book to gain a good understanding of the "math" goes on chemistry. The book doesn't provide goods STEPS in chemistry problems. For example, the text lacks a section that tells teh student how to draw a Lewis Dot Structure and the steps to determine bonds. This text also has labs but they aren't really that good.

The book does offer good examples of realife chemistry in action. Things are organized well with good charts, graphs, and summary tables. The book problems are o.k. but one should supplement the book with another excercise book. It's easy too understand and good for first year chem only.

GREAT READ!!!!!

Great read! I loved this book as well as her others. I don't know why some people wouldn't like this book because of "grammar" run on sentences etc. Yes because THAT'S why I read the books because of grammar(sarcasm) incase in was hard to miss! I could completely keep up with the characters. I had no problem at all. Love scence's weren't clumsy but just as hot as all her other love scenes. Let me tell you if you had a problem with those scenes because of grammar you have more problems than not liking a book! Thanks for another great read!!!!!!!

Brody by Joyee Flynn is the eighth book in the Resistant Omegas series.

Brody was sold to the dire wolf pack at the age of six and he was the first of fifteen Omegas who were held there until they were freed by the members of the Omega Network. Omegas had been sold to the highest bidder and used to give their inner circle power without anyone to help them until the Omega Network was set up. Brody had his omega powers activated as a child when his alpha sexually abused him. He did everything he could to protect the younger children, even if that meant taking their place in the alphas bed.

Tristan, an omega, is captured by the Wolf Council for questioning and the Omegas fear that the past may be repeating itself. Hundreds of years ago, Omegas were killed by their inner circles because they were frightened of the powers they were gaining. Wesley, the strongest Omega, goes to Lord Ellys, an ancient vampire, to go to the council to testify about the atrocities committed against the Omegas, since he had been alive at the time. As Wesley and the Omegas start the task of assessing the council members to ensure they were the correct individuals to be there, Brody's powers begin to spiral out of control. Brody meets Leif and Asher, two Beta candidates, and immediately feels connected to them. While struggling with his feelings for them, Jaxon, an alpha, arrives to be tested and instantly falls for Brody. Now Brody has the inner circle he never wanted, but desperately needs to ground his abilities. Can Brody overcome the trauma he endured and look towards a better and brighter future?

I was taken by surprise by the way this book started. I knew that this confrontation would occur at some time, but the way it unfolded took my breath away. It was horrifying the way the Omegas and the Vampires were almost exterminated hundreds of years ago, but Lord Ellys' willingness to assist them in anyway showed that it was time to set the record straight. As Brody's past was revealed, it was easy to understand his hesitancy to trust Leif, Asher and Jaxon. It was sad how he felt that he was to blame for the abuse the other children with him took, when in reality he shielded them as much as he could, figuring he wasn't much older than they were at the time. As the powers of the Omegas increase, it was easy to understand why others would be afraid, except that all they wanted was to live in peace with their mates. Someone brought up the point that maybe there was something or someone that forced the inner circles to kill their Omegas hundreds of years ago, but no one knows. That is one question to the many secrets about the Omegas that has yet to be revealed.

Why do I keep reading these?

It's not a novel, it's a wordy short story. Characters are cardboard cutouts with almost nothing to identify them from one another. The sex is clumsy and formulaic, the plot half-baffling and half-boring, the dialogue wooden and stilted. Maybe the author has to write a certain number of these to fulfil a contract? Regardless, this took me all of 40 minutes to read, and I'm annoyed I devoted even that much time to this mess.
And I even LIKE gay werewolf porn, too.

Knuth introduced the MIX computer and its machine language: a teaching tool that powerfully illuminated the inner workings of the algorithms he documents. Later, with the publication of his Fascicle 1, Knuth introduced MMIX: a modern, 64-bit RISC replacement to the now-obsolete MIX. Now, with Knuth’s guidance and approval, Martin Ruckert has rewritten all MIX example programs from Knuth’s Volumes 1-3 for MMIX, thus completing this MMIX update to the original classic.

Building on contributions from the international MMIXmasters volunteer group, Ruckert fully addresses MMIX basic concepts, information structures, random numbers, arithmetic, sorting, and searching. In the preparation of this supplement, about 15,000 lines of MMIX code were written and checked for correctness; over a thousand test cases were written and executed to ensure the code is of the highest possible quality.

The MMIX Supplement should be read side by side with The Art of Computer Programming, Volumes 1-3, and Knuth’s Fascicle 1, which introduces the MMIX computer, its design, and its machine language. Throughout, this supplement contains convenient page references to corresponding coverage in the original volumes. To further simplify the transition to MMIX, Ruckert stayed as close as possible to the original–preserving programming style, analysis techniques, and even wording, while highlighting differences where appropriate. It sure took long enough for this book to come out. I started reading the art of computer programming a few years ago, and though I enjoyed the MIX language, the fact that Knuth talked frequently about how out of date MIX was made me always second guess myself and I eventually just gave up to wait for the MMIX supplement to be done. Thankfully that time is finally here.

I have just started over The Art of Computer Programming with this new supplement in hand. Though I haven't gotten far, it certainly hasn't let me down yet. The little introductory section on programming style and techniques was also very good. And, as we have come to expect in this series, the book is beautifully bound and typeset.

I'm still patiently waiting for the 2020's final addition of this wonderful series, but this work should hold me over and give me a lot of stuff to read and work on.

Great execution of an offbeat idea

I have owned volumes 1–3 of TAOCP since 1999. I spent weeks with them while trying to write my PhD thesis on Shellsort. I admire their scope, appreciate the precision, and enjoy the humor, but I have never found a good use for the snippets of MIX assembly code. MIX is just too different from the environment I work in, for example: Knuth’s implementation of Shellsort is self-modifying.

Around 2000, Knuth designed the successor to MIX, an imaginary 64-bit RISC computer MMIX, and asked volunteers to rewrite the programs from TAOCP 1–3. The result is “The MMIX Supplement…” by Martin Ruckert. Alone, the book makes little sense, you should read it side by side with TAOCP. Be wary that it does not teach the MMIX assembly language. Look for its descriptions online or in the MMIX fascicle by Knuth.

The book starts with a brief introduction to the coding style and programming techniques used in it. This is followed by the main part, which are updates to TAOCP. A typical section consists of an anchoring sentence or two taken from TAOCP, comments about the mapping of variables to registers, a piece of MMIX code ranging from a couple of lines to 290 lines (an elevator simulator), and a formula for its running time. Longer expositions cover input and output, threads and semaphores, and representing linked data structures in memory. There are also updates to the exercises and their answers.

The precision of the prose reminds me of Knuth himself. The implementations of the algorithms are thoroughly tested. They shave off every possible cycle of the MMIX processor, even outside loops. For instance, the solution to the first exercise, “The Date of Easter Sunday” begins with allocating a global register for the constant 970881267037344822 = 2^{64}/19+2/19, which allows us to compute year mod 19 with a MULU; GET; MUL; SUB sequence, 2.77 times faster than DIVU; GET. Another example of optimization is tagging pointers in their low-order bits, helpfully ignored by the MMIX processor when accessing memory.

My only gripe from the perspective of a software engineer is that these clever low-level tricks do not translate to the high-level code we usually write. They remind me of Dijkstra’s words from “A Discipline of Programming”: “I know of mathematicians who revel in such optimization problems, sometimes thinking that they constitute the central problems of computer programming.” In TAOCP, algorithms are also presented as steps of pseudocode mixed with prose. You can translate them into a high-level programming language easier than from MIX or MMIX code. Just don’t be surprised that TAOCP 1–3 predates structured programming and Knuth is fond of GOTO. I think that a book expressing the algorithms from TAOCP in a mainstream programming language would be a best seller.

SAP2000 includes routines for the analysis and design of structures with linear or nonlinear behavior subjected to static or dynamics loads; (material non-linearity or large displacements non-linearities) and may be used most efficiently in the microcomputer. The larger versions of SAP2000 have the capability for the analysis of structures modeled with virtually any large number of nodes. This new fifth edition of the book uses, almost exclusively, the introductory version of SAP2000 which has a capability limited to 25 nodes or 25 elements. The set of educational programs in Structural Dynamics includes programs to determine the response in the time domain or in the frequency domain using the FFT (Fast Fourier Transform) of structures modeled as a single oscillator. Also included is a program to determine the response of an inelastic system with elastoplastic behavior, and another program for the development of seismic response spectral charts.

low quality pictures

The material is well structured and the book is written in a clear and concise manner that's why I give five stars to the author. But I am really disappointed because I do believe that is unacceptable nowadays to allow for printing a book with such a poor quality of sketches/pictures. I think that most of them are scanned from previous material, and unfortunately it turned out that the scanning equipment was too sophisticated for author's assistants. So, I rate the publisher with just one star! - Please note that my comment refers to the fifth edition.

Quality Material, with Dust & Bumps

(Re: 5th Edition) The principles of dynamics are timeless. In this regard, the book is excellent. Each chapter tackles a specific topic, develops it, and stays on topic. Dynamics can be difficult to process for a student.

There are many issues in this edition which can be improved with a revision.
1. Chapter 24 discusses the UBC 97. That building code was replaced with IBC 2003... which was replaced with IBC 2006... then 2009... then IBC 2012. Four code changes behind is unforgivable in engineering. The methods of the UBC differ greatly from the IBC. This is a compound problem. However, chapter 25 covers the IBC 2000, so there's that.
2. The book introduces the student to SAP2000. Honestly, I never heard of this analysis software before this book. More well known are RISA and RAM Advanse.
3. Some problems have incorrect answers. Some equations have small errors. Some graphics look like copies of copies of copies. The variables are illegible due to the ink bleeding the letters into Rorschach blots. The binding on my edition was so dry, it broke after a week.

In short: The material and content are better than adequate. But, a revision is needed.
