I love how this book went well with "Smile". Raina is one of my favorite writers. I would recommend and Raina's other book "Drama". I hope Raina writes more books for the series!

Sisters by Raina Telgemeier

Summary (208 pages): In this follow-up to her highly acclaimed graphic novel Smile, Raina Telgemeier tells the story of her relationship with her younger sister, Amara. The main story is of a road trip 13-year-old Raina takes from California to Colorado with her mother, Amara, and their younger brother. In flashbacks, we see a much younger Raina wishing for a sister, then experiencing disappointment with the reality of a baby, then a toddler. There are other difficult family situations for Raina to deal with, including her father’s extended job loss and her parents’ possible separation, but in the end, the family ties remain strong.

Pros: Raina Telgemeier is probably my favorite graphic novelist. Her artwork is just right for elementary kids, and the stories are engaging and positive. This would be a good book to give a reluctant girl reader.

Cons: This didn’t have quite the upbeat ending I enjoyed in Smile. It is a graphic novel, so it will be a quick read for many kids.

I really enjoyed "Smile" and "Drama" and figured I should finish out the three books and just read "Sisters" now rather than holding off.

In this installment Raina remembers when her sister was born and how they came to be less than the fights and more of family. They also deal with an awkward cross-state trip where they learn their parents are having marital problems.

Personally I felt this book didn't really hold up to "Smile"'s success. I found myself skimming some of the passages simply because they weren't nearly as interesting. Instead of it containing some relatable stories surrounding a middle schooler growing up, it was more like one long anecdote on the relationship of sisters.

While I could respect what the author was conveying, I really struggled with interest throughout the entire thing. There was no resolution to the story with the parents (understandable but still). Also the story didn't really have a plot other than a general snapshot of family. It bothered me a bit and I found myself flipping forward to see if anything interesting actually happened.

Frankly I'd recommend it for huge fans of "Smile" and Raina Telgemeier but otherwise I'd skip it.

About the Author
Born in France, Matthieu Ricard is a Buddhist monk who left a career in cellular genetics to study Buddhism in the Himalayas over forty-five years ago. An excellent source of information about altruism. Informative and inspiring.

The basic thesis of this comprehensive book is that altruism is a vital idea that can help us to recognize and to respond to the major challenges of our time. It is very well-documented and it took the author five years to prepare this absorbing work. Mattieu Ricard is a celebrated Buddhist monk and scientist who received a PhD in cellular genetics at the Institut Pasteur in Paris. He left his home in France, 35 years ago and lives in Nepal, where he has been working in various humanitarian projects in the Himalayas. He has been an active participant in the study of the effects of meditation on the brain and is author of various best-selling books, including "Happiness," and "Why Meditate?"

From the first page, Ricard introduces the reader to the various forms of altruism and portrays “true love” as a supreme form of compassion. He recognizes that individualism, greediness, egocentrism, and narcissism are human forces that oppose altruism, and brings up the famous Groucho Marx quip, “why should I care about future generations? What have they ever done for me?” Nevertheless, through the entire book, he conveys an astonishing and varied amount of information, ranging from historical analyses, comparative biology, the role of the hormone oxytocin, the functioning of “mirror neurons,” and the effects of vagal tone on the parasympathetic nervous system, to explain that humans are social animals that have a natural tendency to cooperate; such a view is opposite to the well-known concept that humans are by nature competitive, selfish and behave like wolves. The book gives a particular emphasis to two central themes, the demonstration that altruism exists, and how to cultivate it.

The book arrives at a most propitious moment when the United Nations is holding negotiations to adopt a new strategy for the next 15 years, called “Sustainable Development Goals” (SDGs). It is also the time when many religious groups are intensifying their teachings about tolerance and cooperation to deal with the modern world, and particularly the affirmation that we have the moral obligation to act, as stated in the recent papal encyclical about climate change. Ricard expands the notion of altruism to deal with its social dimension and devotes many pages to explain the concepts of interdependence and interconnectedness, which are at the core of the yoga tradition. Based on solid scientific research, he brings the well-known concept of “planetary boundaries” to explain the magnitude of the current planetary challenges. The fifth part of the book is devoted to discuss the basis of a future altruistic society.

Altruism is a dense encyclopaedic and documented work that demands deep study and reflection. It has 1,769 references, printed in the last 131 pages as end-notes. It will remain for many years a major reference on the subject. We hope that in a new edition the publishers will include an alphabetical index of authors and subjects as this scholarly work will be an indispensable source of information. His major concluding remarks are a clear message: “We must dare to embrace altruism. Dare to say that real altruism exists, that it can be cultivated … and that the evolution of cultures can favour its expansion. Dare to teach it in schools. .. Dare to proclaim that altruism is not a luxury, but a necessity.”

A highly readable and yet profound book on altruism, compassion and empathy by a noted biologist Tibetan monk, commonly referred to the "happiest man" on earth. The book is lucidly written with poignant warnings aganist our individualistic, and often narcissistic, tendencies in favor of more egalitarian and altruistic society and behavior. Highly recommended.

I just finished reading this 850 pages long book and I recommend every single page of it. “Altruism” was written by cellular biologist, Matthieu Ricard, better known as a Buddhist monk.

It is filled with detailed information about what ails the world from violence at school to environmental degradation, to the ruthlessness of financial markets, to unabated consumption.

It is not a doom book, quite opposite.It proposes solutions and lists scores of areas of progress, cooperation and environmental success stories.

It starts rather appropriately with defining altruism, the neuroscience behind it, how it emerges and how it can be cultivated. I found all the information offered absolutely fascinating.

It concludes with an array of concrete proposals to change our world into one of respect, cooperation and kindness, where harmony becomes the modus vivendi for this planet, for humanity and for us as individuals.

I highly recommend it.

The book "Sex, Men and God" is immensly helpful in understanding the underlaying reasons for sexual addiction. The problem is affecting men all over the world. Dr. Weiss gives you a thorough understanding of the problem and clear real-life examples. He also gives you practical step-by-step guidelines for working through the problems and solving them on your way to sexual success. The author obviously has years of counseling experience on the subject. I strongly recommend the book.

A conservative, prosperous, American journalist gadding around the world laughing at all the ways less successful nations screw up their economy--this might not sound like the recipe for a great read, unless you're Rush Limbaugh, but if that journalist is P.J. O'Rourke you can be sure that you'll enjoy the ride even if you don't agree with the politics. Although Eat the Rich is subtitled A Treatise on Economics, O'Rourke spends relatively few pages tackling the complexities of monetary theory. He's much happier when flying from Sweden to Hong Kong to Tanzania to Moscow, gleefully recording every economic goof he can find. When he visits post-Communist Russia and finds a country that is as messed up by capitalism as it was by Communism, O'Rourke mixes jokes about black-market shoes with disturbing insights into a nation on the verge of collapse. P.J. O'Rourke is more than a humorist, he's an experienced international journalist with a lot of frequent-flyer miles, and this gives even his funniest riffs on the world's problems the ring of truth.

Having chewed up and spat out the politically correct (All the Troubles in the World) and the U.S. government (Parliament of Whores), O'Rourke takes a more global tack. Here, he combines something of Michael Palin's Pole to Pole, a soupcon of Swift's A Modest Proposal and Keynsian garnish in an effort to find out why some places are "prosperous and thriving while others just suck." Stymied by the "puerile and impenetrable" prose of condescending college texts, O'Rourke set forth on a two-year worldwide tour of economic practice (or mal-). He begins amid the "moil and tumult" of Wall Street ("Good Capitalism") before turning to dirt-poor Albania, where, in an example of "Bad Capitalism," free market is the freedom to gamble stupidly. "Good Socialism" (Sweden) and "Bad Socialism" (Cuba) are followed by O'Rourke's always perverse but often perversely accurate take on Econ 101 ("microeconomics is about money you don't have, and macroeconomics is about money the government is out of"). Four subsequent chapters reportedly offer case studies of economic principles, except that Russia, Tanzania, Hong Kong and Shanghai all seem to prove that economic theory is just that. There's lots of trademark O'Rourke humor ("you can puke on the train," he says of a trip through Russia, "you can cook tripe on alcohol stoves and make reeking picnics of smoked fish and goat cheese, but you can't smoke"). There's also the feeling that despite (or maybe because of) his lack of credentials, he's often right. In his latest, humorist O'Rourke (The Enemies List, LJ 4/15/96) sets out to explain economics, a discipline he says is little understood because it is (a) complex and (b) boring. As if to prove these points, when O'Rourke, normally a funny guy, goes nose-to-nose with hard-core economics things get complicated and, well, a little boring. He atones, though, with loopy observations about some of the have and have-not countries he visited in his research for the book. On Russia's similarity to the United States: "To an American used to cute, fussy little Western Europe, Russia is like mail from home. News that your dog died, maybe, but news from home nevertheless." And on Tanzanian wildlife: "The Cape Buffalo is just a cow, but a gigantic and furious one?the bovine as superhero, the thing that fantasizing Herefords wish would burst upon the scene between feed lot and Wendy's." Dull patches aside, this is not your father's economics text?it's way more fun. Recommended for all public libraries.

Entertaining 1990's history of worldwide Government financial incompetence

Its worth reading just for the history lesson. Most of its old news from the 1990's but, O'Rourke shares his personal observations of government systems as he travels across the world. P. J. O'Rourke makes an otherwise wonky and boring subject entertaining and easy to read.
