OUTSTANDING !

An outstanding book for a beginner or more experienced woodworker. I am truly impressed. I am a fairly experienced woodworker. I own many books on the subject. Glen Huey has produced a very fine book on period furniture.

Another very excellent book is Lonnie Bird's: "Period Furniture Details" I would reccomend buying both books.

This book is more step by step and informative than many.There are five main projects:1.block front chest 2.Massachusetts high chest{high boy}3.Pennsylvania chest on chest 4.Pennsylvania tall case clock 5.New England desk and bookcase{secretary} All projects are thorougly covered with step by step construction instructions.The book is easy to use in the shop with its spiral binding.There is an accompanying D.V.D That is by itself worth the price of the book! Every project has full cut lists and sources for specialty hardware.The D.V.D {82 minutes} has detailed demonstrations on: making cabriole legs,stickered miters,dye finishing,ogee feet and more. There are printable full size patterns for all curved or special parts for all projects on the D.V.D. [One negative the book like many is printed in China and in my opinion the picture and printing are not as good as many others] If you want to build one of these period pieces this is the book for you,you can do it!

Tree books are the exact same

Illustrated Guide to Building Period Furniture and Building 18th Century American Furniture and Fine Furniture for a Lifetime (Popular Woodworking) are the same book. I bought the tree at the same time not knowing that.

Perfect for someone who likes to jump right in

I give some context on myself, to help you understand where my review is coming from: I have only built one half of one of the pieces in this book (the lower half of the secretary). I began this book/dvd with basic woodworking skills, but have done no serious furniture building. I have a table saw, scroll saw, router (with table) and drill press. My prior experience comes from boat building.

I consider the book to be an excellent guide to building furniture that you will be proud to have made. The plans are very thorough and the DVD is an excellent supplement for the more difficult parts. Although all the pieces covered in the book are quite involved, there is some variation in difficulty between projects so that you can develop your skills as you work through different projects. Besides hand tools, you will need the tools I mention above as well as a thickness planer. For some pieces you will need a lathe and a band saw. This book has allowed me to make the transition from basic furniture that looks homemade due to its simplicity to truly classic furniture. The pictures that accompany each step are excellent. Sometimes I had to rely on information on the pictures (such as measurements) that I could not find on the plans themselves, but all the information needed is there in one form or another.

Finally! A book that's truly about how to trade!

I've been trading for about 7-8 years now, first as a swing trader and now primarily a day trader. I have a pretty good thing going but I'm always studying, always trying to learn something new to give me an edge. I've read a ton of books on trading and investing--I have a lot of the big name books that have hundreds of reviews and lead the pack in sales. All I have to say is thank God for the digital age and the ability to self publish, because this gem of a book would not exist if Harvey Walsh had to first go out and get a book deal with a major publishing house. At this point in my trading career, if I learn a couple of new tricks or concepts from a book I'm happy. I'm totally happy with my purchase of this book.

The vast majority of trading and investing books out there are preparatory--they tell you the things you need to know and have and be before you trade. They go through risk management, indicators, trading psychology, all the things you'll need to know before you start trading. All of these are critical to a trader's success, but nearly all of them drop you off and say goodbye at the point where you're sitting at your PC, logged into your broker's trading platform, trying to put it all together and actually made a trade. Harvey's book picks up where those books leave off. It astounds me that there aren't more books like this out there. Well, no, I guess it doesn't--most people with the knowledge and ability to actually pull off a day trade either have a pamphlet sized book that they're selling for $89.99, or they have their own websites and "systems" and chat rooms, through which they're willing to impart their knowledge for a scant $400 a month. Harvey has done beginning to intermediate level traders a huge service with this book. This is a sick bargain.

This book is very, very rare in that it really is a how to book on day trading. It gives specific trading setups, how and when to enter, and after you're in, how to manage the trade. These are valid, sound techniques--anyone with a significant amount of real experience trading would recognize them. He's also a good teacher, his clear and straightforward style making it easy to understand the concepts he's trying to get across.

But it doesn't stop there. Harvey gives the reader a well written, though brief, primer on all of those same preparatory concepts the big boys' books have. He talks about markets in general, indices, sectors, futures, order types, risk management, position size, brokers, the importance of paper trading, charting, chart patterns, indicators, support & resistance, and more. He really does cover all the bases.

The book does have a few shortcomings, but this is less a criticism of the book than it is a realization that no one book is going to give you everything, nor is one person's take ever the final word on any subject. Many of what I call the preparatory topics, like "what are futures," or risk management, are only brief introductions to the topics. There are entire books written on subjects that Harvey gives only a few paragraphs or maybe a couple of pages worth of explanation. This is understandable, though--the focus of the book is how to day trade, not how to become expert in every conceivable aspect of trading.

Another important point here is that this is just one way to day trade, not The Way. Harvey is big on chart patterns and on entering trades where support or resistance has been broken, which is a totally valid way to trade, but this style often ignores the dollar of price movement that's happened prior to the breakout that nets 20 cents. This type of trading can definitely be profitable, but after mastering these techniques the trader needs to keep learning from his own experience as well as from others.

So, here's my advice to you if you're a new trader: Buy and read this book. When you finish it, start paper trading. Then buy a few of the best books from the big guys, like (especially) Brett Steenbarger, Mike Bellafiore, Alexander Elder, Marcel Link, Van Tharp and others. Read and understand them. Understand that risk management and preservation of capital are the most critical aspects of trading, far more important than entries and exits. Spend time going through the pile of trading websites, taking advantage of their free info. Then, read this book again. You should then be ready to log into your trading platform and start trading with a small amount of money. From there it's up to you.

A very simplistic, phoned-in book that pretends to be an introduction to day-trading. The graphics that are blurry and hard to read and there are not enough of them. The bright yellow cover mimics the "Dummies" series, which you would be far better off ordering. Better yet, get Toni Turner's "Beginner's guide to Day Trading Online."

Finally a Practical Day Trading Book

I've been trying to learn how to day trade, but all the books are mostly rhetoric that provide no practical advice in regards to what you need to do.

This book sits you down, tells you the basics of day trading, teaches you the basic indicators (triangles, head and shoulders, etc), and really gives you a feel for how to day trade. Mr. Walsh tells you which market to focus on (NASDAQ), possible software to use for every aspect, and he really just guides you the whole way. Great read, very glad I found this book.

Very minor drawback: I felt like Mr. Walsh was pushing an online service a bit much in one chapter. The service did, however, seem like it could be very useful for serious day traders, so maybe I shouldn't be complaining.

About the Author
WILLIAM O'GRADY teaches linguistics at the University of Hawaii at Manoa and is the author of several scholarly books. His research focuses on syntactic theory, language acquisition, and Korean.

JOHN ARCHIBALD in addition to teaching linguistics at the University of Calgary, studies the acquisition of phonology and has written several books on the subject.

MARK ARONOFF is professor of linguistics at Stony Brook University and was President of the Linguistic Society of America for 2005. He has written numerous articles and several books on aspects of linguistic morphology, as well as on orthography and the teaching of linguistics.

JANIE REES-MILLER is director of the English as a Second Language program at Marietta College, Ohio. In research and teaching, she is concerned with the interface between theory and practice and with making linguistics accessible to nonlinguists. She is coeditor with Mark Aronoff of The Handbook of Linguistics.

Fantastic Introductory Textbook

I am a Linguistics PhD student, and when I was taking Introduction to Theoretical Linguistics, this was the suggested textbook. The writing is clear and concise, with great explanations and examples. In my upper level classes I find myself returning to this book frequently to clarify concepts. I would absolutely recommend this to anyone studying linguistics at any level. My only qualm is that the book relies heavily on examples from the American English language. I suppose that is fine for beginners, but it is definitely important to have examples from other languages as well. :)

Lacking without study guide.

I feel like I need to write a review to balance out all these reviews of the condition of the book. This book is terrible for someone that wants to be led through each section slow and steady with optimum examples and reasoning corresponding directly to the examples. The 'appendix' for each section, especially complex sections like Phonology, is painfully short.

It has exercises but absolutely no way to understand how to do those exercises except within the framework of the main definitions of the book and the aforementioned appendix sections. Think of it like a math book with no answers and very few examples on how to work your way through the various problems presented. A study guide is usually very helpful with math but I find it absolutely necessary here.

In short I find this book lacking for sections like Phonology. IMO you need the study guide or it's not going to be as clear as it needs to be. I guess with a great teacher and the book it is possible to work your way through it, but for me I was hoping for more.

TLDR: Get the study guide. This book by itself is mediocre for learning HOW to actually do problems.

An excellent overview of the huge field of linguistics, but somewhat narrow-minded at times.

A great overview of the incredibly broad and intriguing field of linguistics. O'Grady et al. have done a very nice job presenting a clear, concise, and well-organized view of several essential elements of the field. As a sociolinguist, I definitely recommend this book for anyone looking for an overview of linguistics.

One of my only complaints is that there's a pretty significant bias toward structuralist, Universal Grammar, and generative linguistics, with very little indication given that this is the perspective the book is taking or that there are other perspectives (most notably the up-and-coming usage-based perspective), which may give readers with less knowledge of the field a somewhat unduly narrowed understanding. Overall though, this is a great work that was highly enjoyable and informative!
