A good companion...

I am not finished with this book yet...to this moment I am half of the way. This book reads like a good novel, it is so well written that you can not put it down!!!

All issues are fairly addressed and explained. When you can learn and have a little bit of fun reading a book...It can not get any better...

If you are not an economist ( good for you!!!) but like me , are interested in the subjet..this book is for you.

Years ago while I was an undergraduate I decided to consider Economics as a major. I'd read a couple articles and these interested me to learn more--despite my high school Economics experience. One of the articles was Yanis Varoufaknis' (co-written with Joseph Haveli) 'The Global Minotaur' in Monthly Review.
I was so interested by the argument presented by Mr. Varoufaknis in that article that I...almost bought this book! And then checked it out from my college library! Then I bought it.
I credit this book with getting me an "A" in all the 'neoclassical' economic theory classes I had to take at the undergraduate level (Microeconomics, Macroeconomics, Labor Economics, as well as, History of Economic Thought).
The book is a gem. The writing flows and somehow maintains your interest in even the most arcane discussions of neoclassical economics. There are excellent quotes interspersed throughout the text. Brain teasing puzzles, paradoxes, and thought-experiments. Excellent summaries of a wide range of debates on a host of theoretical, policy, philosophical, and political issues relating to economics. Debates that can and will--if you're at all interested in economics--help you decide into what arena of economics you'll want to study. Or, whether or not you will want to study economics at all--and maybe, why you should or shouldn't. But besides all that, the book is a masterpiece in that it's an enjoyable and readable detailing of what modern economics is, and why it is that way. What an accomplishment! And once you have a solid understanding of those--which this book not only offers but demands--economics becomes not dismal but somehow, intriguing. Get your hands on this book. You'll be happy you did.

A good read

I like reading books on subjects I know little about.

When interested in economics, I was referred to the this book several times.

I hesitated at first due to the price, but decided to go with it due to recommendations (something I rarely gamble on)

I was very pleased. Well written, and easy to read. Just what I was looking for. I really want to see how Varoufakis would tackle companions for other subjects beyond economics.

The exercises were challenging but full of errors. Some tables were incorrect as well. To successfully complete the Activity exercises required knowledge explained in later chapters. Hopefully the necessary revisions will appear in the next edition.

Betensky approaches [the reader] with a flexible, searching style that reflects her willingness to take unexpected directions in her quest for understanding and her ability to elucidate these thoughts for the reader...the exercises contribute to the book's practicality for the art therapy reader... This thoughtful, practical book presents multiple examples from clinical case material demonstrating the effectiveness of art therapy, particularly to the non-art therapist. About the Author
Mala Gitlin Betensky, Ph.D., ATR, formerly visiting professor of art therapy at the University of Delaware in Newark and at Haifa University in Israel, is an art therapist and clinical psychologist in private practice in Washington, D.C. She is the author of The Social Psychology of Adolescents (1954) and Self-Discovery through Self-Expression (1973).

What do you see?

This book is unique in the sense that Mala Betensky applies phenomenological theory to the use of Art in Therapy. Until Mala wrote this book, there was little available for the phenomenologist to read in the use of art in therapy. As a therapist myself, and a phenomenologist, it is refreshing to read about the phenomenological use of Art in Therapy.
There is a wealth of Art Therapy literature using psychalalytic theory, and there is a small amount of work by brief and narrative therapists on the use of Art in Therapy. While there are a few journal articles, and a few chapters in books on the phenomenological use of Art in Therapy, Mala's book is the only one that I know of where a whole book is dedicated to Phenomenology.
As a therapist and researcher, I have found the second chapter very useful. In this chapter, Mala gives a clear description of a four step sequence that a therapist can take a client through. One begins with "pre art play", then shifts to "the process of art work", to "phenomenological intuiting", then the "what do you see? procedure". It is my experience, that these steps usually lead the client to a deeper sense of self understanding and also a sense of resolution. What emerges on the page can be unexpected, often providing a unique insight into the client's problem. In this process, unexpected solutions also emerge.
I have found Mala's process to be a very powerful theraputic tool, particularily when clients have sensitive concerns that they may have difficulty verbalising. For example, some clients, who have been abused as children, can be very reluctant to verbally describe their experiences. These clients are more comforetable drawing their experiences. They may also feel safer with the drawing process because it allows them to externalise the matter of concern. What they promised not to talk about, can sometimes be drawn.

An excellent account of life with POW backdrop.

One of the few books by a Vietnam War POW written very shortly after the war. A view into history that has not been colored by outside influences. It leaves you with little doubt about the truly patriotic nature of the men who were fighting in the war and how they felt about their captors and those that would defend the North Vietnamese. It is an inspirational life story that uses the author's POW experience to show the inner strength that people have if they can summon it. There are lessons here that go beyond the history.

Fantastic Book - Great Read

This book is a must read for anyone with an interest in the Vietnam War - or in the ways that the human spirit can overcome extreme adversity. I read this cover to cover without putting it down. It isn't organized chronologically - but by various topics. The beginning does start off before Captain Plumb went to Viet Nam; and the end is about Captain Plumb's return home - but the middle of the book is largely organized by topics. Each chapter is relatively short, so you could put it down and come back later; I didn't. It drew me in and I couldn't stop until it was over.

I'm no Hero

I met Charlie at a sales conference in Minneapolis. He made a fantastic presentation to us. I wanted to learn more details of his capture & confinement, so I bought his book. I generally liked it, albeit the cronogolgy was confusing. He jumped from 1969 to 1971, then back to 1967, then back to 1970. it was difficult to follow his timeline. I did like the detail I was looking for. I felt the pain, anger, sadness, isolation, hunger, that existed for all the prisoners. I sent the book to my son who's currently a Marine serving in Japan. I will continue to recomend it to others I feel can appreciate the book in it's literal sense.

About the Author

CERI B. DEAN is the vice president of field services at McREL. She is responsible for the development and successful implementation of field services. Prior to joining McREL, Ceri taught science and mathematics at the high school and college levels and served as an educational consultant. She holds a Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of Connecticut at Storrs, and an M.S. in Atmospheric Science from Colorado State University.

ELIZABETH ROSS HUBBELL conducts workshops and training for K–12 teachers on research-based instructional strategies and technology integration, writes curriculum models for online classes, conducts technology audits for districts, and trains district leaders in using Power Walkthrough software. Elizabeth served as a building-level curriculum director and elementary teacher, where she focused on combining 21st century learning environments with Montessori philosophies. She holds an M.A. in Information and Learning Technologies from the University of Colorado-Denver and a B.S. in Early Childhood Education from the University of Georgia.

HOWARD PITLER is a senior director for curriculum and instruction at McREL. He works with schools, districts, and state agencies to improve teacher pedagogy to impact student achievement and has been invited to present at technology conferences throughout the country. Prior to joining McREL, Howard was an elementary and middle school principal for 19 years. He holds a Bachelor's degree from Indiana State University and a Masters, Specialist, and Doctorate from Wichita State University.

BJ STONE works with a variety of state and local agencies to facilitate learning professional development for teachers, principals, district administrators and leadership teams in the areas of Balanced Leadership, Classroom Instruction that Works strategies, vocabulary instruction, guaranteed and viable curriculum, and assessment design. BJ has served as a middle and high school science teacher, a university instructor, and a central office administrator. She holds a B.S. in biology with a minor in chemistry, an M.S. in science education, and an Ed.D. in educational leadership and policy study from the University of Northern Colorado.

Cookbook of Classroom Strategies

This is a great book for any teacher regardless of where they are in their career. For beginning teachers it is a valuable resource for teaching strategies. For a teacher in the middle of their career, it is a good tune-up. For a veteran teacher it is a good resource to understanding how teaching is changing and fresh ideas.

I would recommend it to anyone interested in instruction and teaching. I especially recommend it for teachers. It provides the research of why the strategies work and what to do with them.

It is VERY teacher friendly, groups the strategies into 3 categories: Setting the Learning Environment; Accessing Knowledge; Extending Knowledge and provides real-world examples as well as tips for use with "Today's Learners." This is a MUST HAVE for any teacher who is seriously in search of improving his/her instructional practice.

About the Author

Tim Mulqueen has been coaching goalkeepers at all levels since 1990 and is currently the goalkeeper coach with the United States national teams. He is also the goalkeeper instructor for the U.S. Soccer Federation A, B, and C licenses and has helped in the establishment and curriculum for the newly formed U.S. Soccer Federation goalkeeping license.

Mulqueen was an assistant coach and goalkeeper coach for the United States at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing. He has coached athletes who have gone on to achieve worldwide recognition, including England Premier League players Tim Howard, Kasey Keller, Marcus Hahnemann, and Brad Guzan. Before joining U.S. Soccer, Mulqueen coached in the MLS where he won the 2000 MLS Cup and Supporters Shield. While in the MLS, Tim coached Zach Thornton, who went on to win the 1998 Goalkeeper of the Year award. Tim also coached U.S. international goalkeeper Tony Meola when, in 2000, he became the only goalkeeper to win the MLS MVP Award, in addition to being named Goalkeeper of the Year. Mulqueen has coached in four Youth World Cups, two at the U-20 level and two at the U-17 level. He resides in Bradenton, Florida, with his wife, Kathleen, his son, Trevor, and daughter, Cate.

Mike Woitalla is the executive editor of Soccer America, where he has worked since 1985. He has covered four World Cups for the magazine and has reported on soccer from 17 nations. His freelance articles have appeared in more than 30 media outlets in eight countries.

Woitalla is a regular contributor to the British soccer monthly When Saturday Comes and has won six NSCAA Writing Contest awards as well as two Professional Soccer Reporters of America awards. He is the coauthor of former U.S. national team captain Claudio Reyna's book More Than Goals.

Woitalla is a graduate of the University of California at Berkeley, where he was a member of the Golden Bears varsity soccer team. He currently coaches youth soccer and is married to Holly Kernan, a public radio producer, host, and reporter. They live in Oakland, California, with their daughter.

Excellent book!

My 10 year old son wants to 'be' Tim Howard when he grows up. He's a born goalie, the field marshall, and has a few things in common with Howard - he has read Howard's autobiography at least a dozen times in 3 months, and constantly quotes him or passages from the book. We can't afford goalie academy or private coaching, though travel soccer is affordable, so this book is helping teach my son, (and me, I'm a midfield left wing, not a goalie!) about the basic mental and physical aspects of being a goalie and skills needed. My son won't listen to me, but he absorbs what's in this book. It's not a substitute for good coaching and support, but it's an inspiration, a guide, and something that often confirms what I've already tried to teach him.

Mulch is an excellent coach and the book is well laid out, I think, to help parents, coaches, and kids work on skills and the mental attitudes particular to goalkeepers.

Goalkeeper Training Top Notch

I got this book so I could see how Tim Mulqueen trains his keepers and to see how the US National Team works. I was lucky enough to watch Tim conduct practices while he was with the Kansas City Wizards. The book is very informative and gets into a depth of understanding how and why of goalkeeping. I think it is a good training tool for those coaches who are more advanced in goalkeeper training than beginners. Technique and Tactics are a strength from Tim. I have coached goalkeepers for over 20 years and I run the National Goalkeeper Academy so when I say this book is a great addition to my videos and books on goalkeeping it is coming from experience. This book reminded me of some of the things we forget to do with our keepers. Great job Tim.

Would buy this again

Ive now read through it and would recommend it. Bought it for my son, I think it was too wordy for him even though he is an avid reader

My only negative is that there could be more drills and explanation for the novice goalkeeper

Wanted to give it 4 stars because in my particular case it didn't meet all my needs, however the description clearly indicated what it was about and it met those needs
