About the Author
Usama ibn Munqidh (1095-1188) was born in northern Syria. In the last decades of his life he concentrated on writing, collecting his scattered poems into a much-praised�Diwan,�but specialising in topical anthologies of poetry and prose like�The Book of the Staff�or�Kernels of Refinement.�Usama's last patron was the mighty sultan Saladin, to whom he intended his most famous work, the�Book of Contemplation.�He died in Damascus in 1188.

Well translated and presented but deserves an asterik for what the work itself reveals

Paul M. Cobb seems to have done a great job translating the thoughts of medieval Muslim misfit Usama Ibn Munqidh. Many historians and anthropologists have studied this work as it gives us a glimpse into how the Islamic world was reacted to the influx of crusaders in the twelfth-century. The book is most revealing in its more subtle moments; for example Usama recording the dress, bathing habits and gender relations of the crusaders and how this fit (or didn't fit) into Usama's Muslim community. Much of the book however contains a great deal of confusing, often funny, contradictory trash-talking. Usama marvels at the discipline and bravery of Christian knights but then boasts of battling one warrior after another (often with nothing but his wits) and, of course, claiming victory at every turn. Like many of his contemporaries Usama was forced to live, work and trade with Christian emigrants who followed the Crusader armies and he fluctuates between pride in his ability to navigate this new world and denigrating his business partners and neighbors. While Usama champions Islam he does things like engage in sport hunting and runs through the woods slaughtering wild pigs on Ramadan; not exactly things condoned by even the most basic Islamic jurisprudence. In the end what we have is a very linear, very personalized view of the crusades and sketches of a number of localized skirmishes most of which cannot even be historically verified. In short, The Book of Contemplation is interesting read, but often for reasons outside the realm of real scholarship.

Excellent, Fun Read

I was required to read one of three books for a low level history course. I chose this one just because I had never heard of it and didn't really know anything about the Islamic perspective of the crusades (or really anything). It's astoundingly great and I can't believe that it isn't more popular (though according to Wikipedia it is a translated work that has been under many names, and The Book Of Contemplation is just the latest one). The stories are very visceral and sometimes gory, but there's also plenty of light-hearted stories and lessons to be learned. It's definitely a fun read, but can be a little confusing due to the muslim names and places if you aren't familiar with their structure. However, the book includes a glossary of names, maps, and references for expressions and historical things you might not know. I highly recommend this book for anyone that has the slightest interest in the crusades!

Fascinating glimpse of life a thousand years ago in the middle east. Delightful surprises for me included lions roaming the region, hunting with raptors, the state of medicine, and the range of travel. The writer went back and forth from present day Syria to North Africa in an era long before motorized transport. Added bonus, places in the news today crop up including Homs, Damascus, Jerusalem, Cairo, and Baghdad. These were already well established cities even then. Certainly sheds light on how western intervention was regarded back then, and by extension, now.

Very underwhelming...

I like Scott Adams a lot. His Dilbert strip is one of the funniest currently in circulation. His blog is a likewise interesting read. I particularly enjoyed two of his prior "non-comic" books - "The Dilbert Principle" and "The Joy of Work". So I had high expectations when I purchased this book. I'm sad to say that this particular piece is a major disappointment.

If you are expecting another treatise like the two I mentioned above, or any of his other non-comic books, you will be disappointed. For one, it's a mixture of his cartoons and some witty missives about corporate America. The problem is that the reader doesn't get the best of either. His cartoons are simply enlarged to cover two pages (each), with only a sentence or two to accompany them. The book is short, and I was finished in about 15 minutes even being distracted a couple times along the way. Entertainment value is modest at best.

I'm one of those Dilbert-loving fools who will purchase pretty much anything Scott Adams publishes, even though I've been burned a couple times before. This is, sadly, another one of those times where my wallet feels a bit scorched. Happily, Scott Adams produces enough quality product that the occasional clunker can be forgiven. And I forgive you, Scott. Just don't make a habit of it, 'k? :-)

About the Author
Brian Katz is an Assistant Professor of Mathematics at Augustana College in Rock Island, Illinois. He received his BA from Williams College in 2003 with majors in mathematics, music and chemistry, and his PhD from the University of Texas, Austin in 2011, concentrating on algebraic geometry. While at the University of Texas, Austin, Brian received the Frank Gerth III Graduate Excellence Award and the Frank Gerth III Graduate Teaching Excellence Award from the Department of Mathematics. Brian is a Project NExT Fellow, supported by Harry Lucas, Jr and the Educational Advancement Foundation. Michael Starbird is Professor of Mathematics and a University Distinguished Teaching Professor at the University of Texas, Austin. He received his BA degree from Ponoma College and his PhD in mathematics from the University of Wisconsin, Madison. He has held visiting positions at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, New Jersey, and at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California. He served as Associate Dean in the College of Natural Sciences at the University of Texas from 1989 to 1997. Starbird's mathematical research is in the field of topology. He has served as a member-at-large of the Council of the American Mathematical Society and on the national education committees of both the American Mathematical Society and the Mathematical Association of America.

Useful but disappointing

With all the 5 star reviews here I really had my hopes up for this book. I really, really wanted to like it and, to some degree, I did.

This is a very short book. I'm not complaining, I remember the day when excellent technical books were only 200 pages. However, these small outstanding references were kind of like Unix tools - they covered one subject and covered it well. Mr. Tong, on the other hand attempts to teach us Tomcat, Eclipse, Axis, and PKI in a 165 page book.

While I personally didn't need the tutorials on Tomcat, Eclipse, or PKI I thought they were very well done. Unfortunately I didn't feel this way about the Axis portion of the book. When reading the information about Axis it mostly seemed to me to be:

1. Do this.

2. Now do this.

3. Press enter.

4. See, it worked.

OK, so it worked. I still have very little understanding of why it worked or what other options Axis has to offer.

I also felt the book gave the impression that Tomcat-Eclipse-Axis were joined at the hip. I would have prefered to learn the workings of Axis so that I would be comfortable using it on WebLogic or WebSphere. Maybe using Netbeans as my IDE or maybe just using a command line. In my opinion, Mr. Tong does not deliver this kind of Axis understanding.

Lastly, I'd like to comment on the grammer used in the book. It is clear that Mr. Tong is not a native Engling speaker. Don't get me wrong, Mr. Tong certainly speaks English better than I speak a second language. However, I believe editing by a native English speaker would improve the readability of the book. I didn't really have any big problems understanding the text but the grammer does make it hard to read. In many cases I had to read a sentence several times to get the point.

Useful CXF resource

I'm a professional Software Engineer/Architect with many years of J2EE experience but new to the open source Apache CXF. This book has helped me learn the basic CXF through examples. I was also able to get some very good clarifications/explanations from the book author himself. Please note however that this review only rates the CXF SOAP-based sections as I only skimmed over a few Axis2 and REST paragraphs and could not therefore speak for them. If time allows, I will go over those Axis2 sections in a near future and update this review as suited.

Great Resource for Learning Apache Axis

Kent Tong is a gifted writer and educator who knows Apache Axis very well. I found his explanation of a complex topic such as WS-security simply the best that I have seen. The book is rather short at aound 173 pages but very informative. His diagrams and annotated explanations are very useful in conveying a lot of information in a condensed manner which would have required pages and pages of explanation. Kent has used all the open source tools, e.g., Apache Axis, Eclipse, Eclipse WTP, WSS4J, OpenSSL etc., so you don't need to invest anything. If you have access to a computer and internet, you are good to go. While working through the book examples, I found a few typos, mistakes which I conveyed to Kent. He quicky incorporated his updates in the book and gave me access to an updated PDF. I whole heartedly and unhesitatingly recommend this book if you want to learn Apache Axis and particularly, WS-security.

Pippin Vocal/Conductor Score -- Insight Into Working Music

The "Pippin" Vocal/Conductor score, in manuscript, offers an excellent insight into working music, that is, music prepared for live stage performance. The instrumental portion of the score, condensed into basically a heavily annotated piano score, provides a quick glimpse into the essence of the music without getting bogged down in the details of a specific orchestration. This was especially useful for me because a theatre group with which I am associated wants to do "Pippin" with a more contemporary sound. Having this balance between the big-picture and crucial detail is invaluable for that. However, I don't know that I would actually want to conduct a live performance with this publication only because its reduced size (relative to commercially rented full performance scores) makes some things difficult to see especially with the limited light of the orchestra pit and the solid block back binding makes page navigation a bit more challenging. But this publication is proving to be an extremely helpful tool for building new arrangements while keeping a sense of familiarity. I would that more Broadway musicals were published in this format.

Great score - hard to read in places

I have always loved the music from Pippin. For a long time the full score was not available for purchase, so it is nice to have it in print. My reason for giving 4 stars is that the score is published in manuscript form. In this age of computer generated musical scores that look perfect, we shouldn't have to try and decipher notes due to a handwritten manuscript score.

Small price to pay for BIG changes!

I liked Dave Willis "Marriage" page on Facebook & really enjoyed his inspirational posts. When he posted about his iVow book, I went and bought it. My marriage was in crisis for about the past 6 months after 6 years of some small issues & a one very big issue of not effectively communicating with my husband. My Husband & I were both guilty of getting off the path that God intends for all of us, so in this terrible time I turned to God, started reading & prayed harder than I ever had in my life. I started making small changes every day like those quoted in Dave's book. I started to feel better than ever emotionally & started having a more positive outlook toward everyone & everything. Then a miracle happened... I noticed little by little, that my husband's heart started to soften & he had started coming around to me & our family. We still have a long ways to go, but we are both now on the same page & starting Christian guidance counseling. We are now both committed to having a stronger & healthier marriage. I am living proof that God can & does change marriage, even in the most dire situations... Thank you Dave Willis for your great ideas & giving us hope!!! I believe you have been called to do Gods work here on Earth & bringing people back to the way God intended marriage to be. God Bless!

If you want your passion to return to your marriage. read this book.

This book is incredible. I read it aloud each morning to my husband and then we would discuss what we heard. We are like most married couples, searching for things to communicate about, needing guidance on a deeper relationship and a longing to have a marriage that is satisfying and passionate. I encourage all married couples to read this book together. We will read it again together in the future, for I know we will need to be renewed again.

The ideas in this book are based on strong biblical principles, applied so insightfully to marriage in today's world. My husband and I are reading a chapter together each day and discussing the questions at the end, and we have been married for 36 years!
