Best British Army Uniform Book EVER!

Few books can combine the scope of detail and level of research this title does. It would take other uniforms series several volumes to encompass the uniforms of this period, whereas Mr. Forsten does just that.
This book is a wonderful refernce for wargamers, modelers, painters, historians and military enthusiasts. A "must buy" for any good collection.

Excellent first rate uniform book

Bryan Fosten is an expert on the uniforms of the British Army. This books gives a nice comprehensive survey during the period when dress uniform was evolving and worn, both on the battlefield and for ceremony. The numerous illustrations are positively glittering, with excellent details on many accoutrements as well. The drawings are arranged thematically and easy to understand.

Grade 9 Up–This is de Oliveira's first novel, and he's a writer to watch. Sam Smith is a young, sexually confused teen living in Surrey, England. He enjoys hanging out with his friends, Brenda and Pod, and is passionate about playing on the local football team. Then he meets self-confident Toby, another gifted player, who happens to be gay. Toby introduces Sam to the contemporary gay scene in London, which includes Soho nightlife. Sam is intrigued and wonders if he might be gay, as well, especially after he notices mysterious and attractive "Him," a young stranger who occasionally shows up at football games. Eventually Sam comes to the realization that "These are the facts. I'm attracted to boys and girls.... I'm just Sam. I was born like this." De Oliveira has a mature, concise writing style and an excellent command of narrative pacing and dialogue. Sam and his friends are believable characters, flawed but likable, and the author's examination of contemporary British youth will probably intrigue American readers. Raw language and British slang (snogging, shagging, poof, cheeky git, etc.) are used liberally throughout, which requires some adjustment at first. Sam realizes that he is attracted to both boys and girls, and he worries about how his old friends and teammates will respond. Sam's self-analysis can become tiresome at times, but he often approaches his situation with a sense of humor that lightens things up. His favorite place for self-reflection, for example, is the toilet, where he can sit for hours contemplating his feelings. A few random, undeveloped plot points mar an otherwise engaging story: Sam's hookup with a girlfriend of a boy with whom Sam had sexual encounters; Sam's mother's sudden, unconditional acceptance of his sexual orientation. But Sam is an appealing character, and his painful struggles with his sexual identity should resonate with many readers. Ed Sullivan

Nineteen-year-old Sam examines his sexual identity in De Oliveira's often clever but sometimes sluggish debut. Told as a flashback, the British teen recounts events occurring between the end of his first year of college and his team's annual August soccer match with its rivals. At the start of summer, Sam finally admits to himself, "I might possibly in effect maybe potentially have the capability to fancy boys" as well as girls, but he's concerned about how teammates and old friends will respond. A new friendship with Toby, who is also "gentle," pushes him to open up, but not until Toby hooks up with Lucy does Sam realize that he "really, really liked the guy." While Sam's self-study is often overly cerebral, it does occasion some silliness ("Or how about sexuality as a Venn diagram?" Sam asks Toby). Readers will appreciate the author's creation of a funny, flawed-if not always likable-protagonist with a realistically complicated sexuality, and the storytelling includes memorable incidents. In one humiliating scene, Sam vomits after being overwhelmed by his first trip to London's gay quarter, and in another more triumphant moment his teammates stand up to their coach for him just before the big game. Unfortunately, other plot points, such as Sam's one-time hook-up with Lucy, or the sudden appearance of his crush-from-afar at his soccer practice, seem random or underdeveloped and ultimately zap the momentum from Sam's story. I wanted to see one more act

Eddie De Oliveira is an extremely talented young writer. Seeing that he was born in 1979 was rather humbling. With another book to be released in August 2005, he has overcome what we in the writing industry call "resistance", and is a true professional, practicing his vocation - as opposed to an amateur who plays around with his avocation.

The description of the relationship between Sam and Toby - and HIM - is extremely realistic and tangible. It was difficult not to pity Sam as he found his attractions for Toby growing exponentially, although Toby remained distant. And then when Toby met Lucy, a girl that Sam saw first and fancied, although Toby approached her and hit her up, Sam's and Toby's relationship went into a tailspin.

Oliveira did an excellent job getting directly into Sam's head with regard to his fears, concerns and conflicts regarding sexuality. Am I straight - I *am* attracted to girls. Am I gay - I *am* attracted to guys. Am I bisexual - I *am* attracted to boys and girls. Sam actually searched the dictionary to try to find the right word to describe what he felt, and ultimately decided that he couldn't label himself. I've always referred to that as: you love who you love. If you love a girl, you love a girl. If you love a guy, you love a guy.

I felt there was a little too much rumination and focus on soccer, as opposed to direct action - such as dialogue, interaction between characters, etc. While the latter certainly existed, it seemed that rumination captured the majority. I also felt that his declaration of his sexuality came at a very strange time, and I was completely taken by surprise. That said, "coming out", whether as a bisexual, trisexual, whatever - sometimes just happens as it happens, and there is no real reason behind why or when.

However, I thought there was a third act that was missing here, and that would be Sam's interaction with HIM, the guy he had been casually eyeing and flirting with at soccer games. I understand that we our own imagination could fill the blanks for us, but after declaring a label-less bisexuality, his first romance with a guy would have introduced an entirely new element, and one that I think we should have seen. My recommendation would have been less rumination, and a final act with HIM.

Have you ever wondered if you were really straight? Well Same has. After he meets a bisexual boy named Toby he really starts to question his “confused gut” feeling about him. Sam starts to become close friends with Toby, but he thinks he started to feel a little more for him.
When Toby meets this girl Lucy, he starts to like her. Sam has to tell Toby about his “confused gut” feeling before it is too late. Will he?
I definitely recommend to read this book if you like books that make you want to keep reading and have you on edge!

To label or not to label; that is the question. Everyone, at some time or another, asks themselves the question: Who am I? In this book, Sam - a British, football-playing teen, asks himself this question and finds there's no easy answer. Sam struggles with his friendships - from his new friend Toby, who nearly tells their football team that Sam might like boys, to the new hot girl, Lucy, who becomes more than just a third wheel. Sam does this all while hiding out on the toilet, pondering his own sexuality. Not only did this book made me laugh out loud, but Eddie De Oliveira's skill at examining the complex inner-lives of his characters moved me as well. I especially loved the moments where Sam connects with a boy across the field at a football match, and they develop an unspoken quasi-relationship after months and months of seeing each other and saying nothing. It is the hope displayed in these moments which moves LUCKY along, and makes you want to keep reading - to find out if Sam will actually say yes, and take that first step into learning who he really might be... even if it is without a label.

A vivid and uplifting story of how a family pulled not one but two children out of the torments of autism--and into a normal life. Maurice is the pseudonym for a mother of three whose courage and determination overrode the pessimistic prognosis that ``autism is incurable.'' She was already pregnant with her third child when her one-year-old daughter, Anne-Marie, was diagnosed as autistic. Maurice and her husband cast about to find not merely a relief from symptoms but a cure, finally adopting the form of behavior modification found successful in carefully controlled studies by O. Ivar Lovaas, a California-based researcher. The program involved a daily regimen of repetitious training, the resetting of patterns of behavior that had gone awry, and the replacement of sympathy by discipline, interrupting the child's repetitive motions and self- withdrawal no matter how she resisted or cried. The family hired a teacher skilled in behavior modification who worked with Anne-Marie every day, as well as a speech therapist who visited three times a week. To counter what she at first felt were the mechanistic techniques of behavior modification, Maurice also took up ``holding therapy,'' which calls for holding the child tightly for at least an hour a day. It was the behavioral techniques that succeeded, and, in less than two years, the girl was pronounced ``normal''--as was Maurice's younger son, also autistic. Unlike other recent books about children who've recovered from autism (e.g., Donna Williams's Nobody Nowhere, 1992), this offers not only hope but a road map, with names, addresses, and phone numbers for Lovaas and others. (Caveat: Behavioral therapy, Maurice says, benefits measureably only about 50% of autistic kids.) yet the book sounds like it was written by a PhD level Child Psychiatrist

Whoever wrote this book has incredible written skills. I believe Catherine Maurice was a stay at home mom at the time, yet the book sounds like it was written by a PhD level Child Psychiatrist. I don't know many stay at home moms who can write like that. No coincidence that the book is one big sales pitch for Doctors who were pitching ABA therapy in its infancy, back in the 90's when this was written. The entire book is dated and misleading. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone who wasn't looking for a miracle cure the way this book would lead inexperienced people to believe is out there. I have two children on the spectrum and we got them the same ABA therapy described in the book, before they were three. It did not make them "normal" in any capacity. I've seen very few changes that wouldn't have occurred naturally with time. I believe the book claims 47% can become normal if subjected to ABA at an early age. I guess my kids didn't make the cut...or any of the other kids in their classes who have not become "normal" in the past 7 years that I've observed them all. In my children's classes I have seen 0% become normal by any contemporary standards. It's also horrible to act like autism is a death sentence, as if it were terminal cancer. She saved her two kids "from the ashes" through ABA therapy and praying. I guess I failed mine because I didn't pray and now they're dead? Quite the contrary, they're just as happy and healthy as any "normal" kids I know. So what do I have to be sorry about it? Answer: nothing. Not a death sentence at all. In fact, it's been a lot of shocking, unforeseen blessings to our family. I've been observing autistic children for years and I've never seen one who got cured in the capacity that is described in this book....twice!...two miracles!...baloney, I don't believe it. Desperate, gullible people who want to believe in fantasy land miracles will love this book.

I used this book 12 year ago with great success

I read this book in the year 1999 when my son was three years old and had just been correctly diagnosed with Pervasive Developmental Disorder (PDD), which means he was in the autistic spectrum. I did the therapy following the curriculum found in this book and also used another book the author wrote (Behavioral Intervention ...). My son's response to the treatment I myself implemented guided by this book was immediate. Going foward 12 years, I am proud to say that my 15 year old son is a totally typical student in one of the most prestigious high schools in the city (that high school is the dream of every kid in my city, but only 1 in 5 is accepted to it). He has no symptoms of autism. He plays 2 musical instruments, has friends and does not know that he ever had a problem. HE WAS SAVED BY CATHERINE'S BOOKS. CATHERINE, IF YOU READ THIS, PLEASE KNOW THAT I HAVE AN ENORMOUS GRATITUTE TO YOU. WITHOUT YOUR BOOKS I WOULD HAVE LOST MY SON. THANK YOU!

If you have a child with autism or know a child with autism, this book is for you

Two and half years ago, my daughter was diagnosed with autism. Terror, loneliness, and a lack of knowledge wreaked havoc on our family life. We read a lot of books, joined online communities, and finally got her into a very limited ABA program that is part of a university research lab (only once a week during semesters). Through it all our extended family at first denied and then accepted the diagnosis, but other than expressing sympathy, they were at a loss as to how to empathize with us. "Let Me Hear Your Voice" expresses all that we went through. Additionally, it reinforced what we have been learning, that ABA works for some children and that it needs to be done intensively. Ms Maurice also is honest that her children made remarkably "quick" progress and that this is not necessarily the case for all children with autism because each child has varying degrees of the three main categories of symptoms: language (expressive and receptive) delays and disorders; social skills delays and disorders, and obsessively habitual body movements that are unusual.

"Let Me Hear Your Voice" brings readers into the Maurices' world and shows us the fears, the lack of knowledge, the loneliness, and how it can be overcome by taking control of the situation through research, a supportive family, and through the application of applied behavior analysis (ABA). Although she clearly states that their therapy was successful, she cannot promise it will work for all; but she demonstrates that taking initiative and using the science behind the therapy progress can be made.

Most importantly, she eloquently communicates what it is like to be in a family afflicted with autism, which is something that most of us cannot adequately communicate; therefore, this book should be read by everyone who is affected: within the nuclear family, extended family, and even friends of the family.

After reading this story, readers will have learned what autism really is and how everyone needs to work together to help the child and the family make progress against autism.

A good handbook

Considering it is a handbook, I missed a deeper enginnering approach in some important matters; in general it is fine if you need to have a look over sugar manufacturing but if you need to design and size a complete sugar manufacturing plant this book is not enough.

If you want to increase employee motivation in your company, don't try to fix your workers, fix your organization. Most motivation initiatives treat motivation as a problem of the individual employee and try to inspire them to work harder. The better strategy, says author Dean R. Spitzer, is to do something to change the work conditions that de-motivate employees.

The first step to increasing employee motivation is to identify and eliminate the things that de-motivate employees. Here are some common workplace de-motivators:

� Office politics. Why work hard if politics is what gets you ahead?

� Unclear expectations.

� Unnecessary rules.

� Poorly designed work processes. Employees who have nothing but boring, repetitious tasks will be very de-motivated.

� Unproductive meetings without a clear purpose.

� Lack of follow-up.

� Constant change.

� Internal competition.

� Withholding information.

� Discouraging responses. The desire to innovate can be suppressed by managers who say no to everything.

� Criticism.

� Tolerating poor performance. Why bother to perform well if bad work is tolerated?

Corporate "escapee" - witnessed inept attempts of management

Spitzer clearly identifies one of the most fundamental problems in business today - motivation, or should I say a a lack of. Supermotivation is something that virtually any business needs, especially entrepreneurs who are in the enviable position of setting it up right from the start.

As a corporate "escapee" (paroled after serving 14 years in various companies, including several Fortune 500) I've witnessed firsthand the inept attempts of management. For example, new PC's and applications are constantly dumped on employees with little or no training. This is something that Spitzer addresses in Supermotivation.

Also, Spitzer knows that super motivation comes from within.
