Fresh Perspective

This book highlights the ethnic diversity amongst those who supported the Third Reich. Germany was willing and able to support a variety of cultures around the world. The view of the Third Reich as the world's most racist regime takes a hit when comparisons are made between Germany, the United States and Britain.

Shining light on the Rainbow Reich.

Multi-culturalism is rife these days but not really new as Veronica Clark (a courageous military historian) shows in her recent book. What motivated many was not the love of the Third Reich so much as them being weary of the British colonial rule or how the English treated them in attaining and maintaining it, disdain for Soviet Bolsheviks, and the international banking cartel. It at least questions in a sober, and not entirely humorless way, the perception of just what the Germany of those years was compared to the huge propaganda saying what we're supposed to believe it was. Even some 'noe-Nazis' could learn from this book and forgo their racialism and realize what they was the German Reich was not what it actually was.
Veronica Clark uses mainly what was written at the time and proves, to me, when Europeans write their history without fear and honestly, it is much more revealing. Who would imagine the German Reich to be so inclusive and struggle deeply with the reality that, to win, many of their old prejudices had to be modified or dropped and did so, more than many so-called Allies fighting for Four Freedoms who claimed to be doing the same things and did not.

What a rich book!

Wow--what a rich book! However, don't expect to get through this book quickly (you won't want to) because it's chock-full of useful information. It is complete with up-to-date research presented by some of the most cutting edge scientists/clinicians.

While the book is written by eleven individuals (one person writes each chapter), it is both thorough and integrated. I can only imagine how much effort and intention it took to have the chapter's authors working with each other. Many authors refer to the other chapters' content within the book, which helps to pull it all together for the reader (e.g. if one author used a term that was different than another's, but represented a similar idea, the author tended to point this out).

The first six chapters of the book address the neuroscience and developmental aspects of emotion. While these chapters will be particularly dense for readers less familiar with neuroscience, each contained valuable, up-to-date information that is worth becoming familiar with. (I also refer readers to Norman Doidge's book on the brain, which is fascinating and easily digested.) The last five chapters focus on specific clinical applications, including individual, couples, and family work. These authors each gave beautiful excerpts of actual cases which bring to life the concepts addressed in the chapters.

I found the book to be an incredible presentation of understanding the concept of emotion and as the title states "the healing power of emotion". It's worth both reading and referring to for many years to come.

I loved this book. It is an extraordinary 5 star buffet of articles by cutting edge neurobiology researchers and psychotherapy clinicians, a who's who in the field. Both the articles on the brain and psychotherapy are consumately well written, and clinical articles have great case illustrations. The psychotherapies described here are moving beyond exploration of pathologies to the transformative experiences where joy, new energy, and delight become possible; that and helping people regulate their dysregulated nervous system. This book is a weaving together of two disciplines that demonstrate what this new frontier looks like. If you have one book to buy --- make it this one. Judi Goodman, LICSW

Brilliant and accessible

The book is a fascinating collection of papers--all connected, yet each with its own distinct flavor reflecting the unique expertise of the individual author. As a clinician who does not have a neuroscience background, I found the book both accessible and highly relevant to clinical practice. I have read these authors separately so am thrilled the meta perspective presented explicitly in the introduction, as well as the weaving together of the concepts that occurs throughout the chapters.

Not just a cookbook -- an idea book!

Every now and then someone writes a cookbook that doesn’t just describe how to make their food, but helps you imagine creating your own food. It teaches you techniques that you could see applying to your own concept. It gives you examples of what someone — with a lot of patience and creativity — was able to create, and makes it seem accessible for you to embark on the same artistic adventure. That’s what this cookbook does. It’s not just a book of recipes, but a showcase and an invitation: here’s what I did, what will you do?

To be honest, I haven’t felt this way since Bakerella started the creative cake pop craze. Amanda isn’t the only person in the world to put something cool inside a cake, sure. But her innovation in the kitchen is inspiring. She makes surprise-inside cakes seem accessible to the home cook on her blog, i am baker, and now in her book as well.

Beautiful and Unique

This is a unique and one-of-a-kind baking book, filled with beautiful photography, recipes, stories, and memories. I have been reading it cover to cover for the stories, something I have never done in a cookbook in the past. I have already ordered several to give as gifts to some special people in my life. I love this book.

Rosalie David is Professor and Keeper of Egyptology at the Manchester Museum, University of Manchester. She has taught university courses on ancient Egyptian religion and has edited or authored more than twenty books.

Dry and disconnected

This book contains a huge volume of information about ancient Egypt, and I am assuming that this is the reason that other reviewers have awarded four and five stars. I would estimate that less than half of the information is in any way relevant to the topic of religion and magic, however. Instead of being a discussion of religion and magic, the book attempts to provide a sweeping history of the entire span of ancient Egyptian civilization. Unfortunately, this history is presented as an endless succession of often unrelated facts with no attempt to draw out interesting patterns and relationships and scant attempt at analysis and explanation. The lack of connection and analysis makes the writing at times almost incoherent. The style of writing can be seen in the following extract from the beginning of a paragraph `Although weak or foreign dynasties tried to revive the myth of the god-king in order to support their own royal status, the political power of the king continued to decline, along with his influence on religion. However, there appears to have been an increased association between the temples and lay people.' After reading the first sentence of the paragraph, I expect it to be further developed with an explanation of the ways in which the power of the king and his influence on religion declined and some explanations of why this might have been so. Instead, the paragraph goes on to discuss some completely unrelated customs involving lay people in temples. Though the book does have some moments where interesting analysis takes place, for the most part it is not even attempted.

The writing also contains a fair number of contradictions. At one point the author claims that priests were not allowed to wear animal skins and then two pages later she describes a priest wearing a panther skin. There must be a logical explanation for this contradiction, but the author offers none. The Pharaoh Akhenaten is described as revolutionary because he introduces monotheism to Egypt and allows no other gods to be worshipped. Within a few pages we suddenly find out that a second deity, the goddess Ma'at was supposedly retained. Once again, no explanation for this contradiction is offered.

The lack of analysis also means that there are occasions when problematic or disputed information is offered up as fact. The author mentions the discovery of Minoan-style paintings in tombs in Egypt and claims this to be unusual since in Minoan civilization wall painting were reserved for palaces. In fact, many scholars would argue that the so-called Minoan palaces were actually mortuary complexes.

In general, the dry, repetitive, disconnected style makes the book a difficult read. History books do not need to be dry. The substance of history is fascinating, but only if the various pieces of information are connected through analysis and explanation into a coherent picture of the subject being portrayed. This book unfortunately does not succeed in achieving that.

A Timely Disappointment

I own several other books by this distinguished, veteran Egyptologist; all of them quite wonderful. This volume seems to have been written with the intention of integrating old and new data about the subject in a more relevant and convenient manner. But, perhaps the desire to entertain won out. I was shocked to find a frequently dim, even cynical view of the Egyptians' sincerity, integrity, and religious sensitivity. The plan of the work seems to have been to produce a very informative overview, helping us to place developments along a clear time line. But, here we find mainly a history of the politics of Egyptian religion and magic, with little of the appreciative anthropological insight found in the work of numerous other authors. It appears to me that Dr. David has finally become bored with Egypt, and wishes to share the feeling. Such a book, almost invidious at times, is unfortunate for a scholar who has produced such important, fair, and congenial work in the past. For many centuries, the contributions of the Egyptians were undervalued by scholarship, and I am happy to see that many authors have lately left the sneering behind in favor of a more sensitive and fair approach, instead of trying to bury an obelisk of achievement in a round hole of prejudice.

A good book but not for an Intoduction to Egyptian History

Although most reviwers are saying this book is a bit contradicory and and at times confusing I found the book very interesting and finished it in 4 days.

Although it is at times I think to someone who has at least a base knowledge of the egyptian history and will find this book quite enjoyable. As a more in depth look in the the egyptian culture.

I bought this book at a book store along with another book entitled "Ancient Egypt: Thebes and the Nile Valley in the year 1200 BCE " which is written like a tourist guide book set in Thebes around 1200bc the time of RamsesII of the New Kingdom. by Charlette Booth.

This other book gives a nice introduction to egptian history and actually had some intersting statements about egypiatian daliy life (Although all of this is historiacal scientific conjecture).

Which leads me back to this book here which is also (historalcal conjecture) a "best guess" and was derived from several older sources and therefore some theorys do contradict what ws said earilier.

But as far the contradiction with the preist not able to wear animal skins into the temple and then a few pages later it saying that the priest wore a lepard skin cloak does not say that he entered the temple wearing a lepard skin cloak merely that possibly he wore it outside the temple in public festivals possibly (again conjecture).

Not too good for self-study

I'm an 8th grader that wants to learn chemistry very badly, and bought this book.

Most of the book provides an adequate explanation for all the essential concepts encountered in a regular high school course. I know this because after reading this book, I looked at the state tests for a high school chemistry course, and I could do most of the problems. There are many examples in the book that help a student understand what the text is trying to explain. There are also a lot of practice problems after each section and chapter that reinforces the contents of the chapter/section very well.

However, without a teacher, if some concept is not clear, then chaos occurs. There are selected parts in the book that are vague in a way. To me, the noticable ambiguity in the text comes in the bonding chapter. They sort of assume that out of nowhere you can write an electron dot structure, a concept that other review chemistry texts take pages explaining. Hybridization was also explained poorly, and several weeks after I read that part (when I was finished with the book), I finally thought I got it, and then a chapter review problem proved that it was still a mystery. I have another chemistry book that I use to help me understand in case I don't get what's going on in this chemistry book.

Bonding isn't the only chapter that is a disaster in clarity (although it is the worst). The chapters from about 16-23 were all not as good as the other ones. There was also some guessing involved in the oragnic chemistry section, but that was not too bad; I still figured it out.

My school uses this textbook (as I found out months after I bought this book). With a teacher, this book is perfect, but without one, get ready to think; appreciate the pictures in there when you can, but focus a lot on figuring out the material.

This book is a decent chemistry book that does a good job in covering chemistry material. Although there are not enough example problems in the book to gain a good understanding of the "math" goes on chemistry. The book doesn't provide goods STEPS in chemistry problems. For example, the text lacks a section that tells teh student how to draw a Lewis Dot Structure and the steps to determine bonds. This text also has labs but they aren't really that good.

The book does offer good examples of realife chemistry in action. Things are organized well with good charts, graphs, and summary tables. The book problems are o.k. but one should supplement the book with another excercise book. It's easy too understand and good for first year chem only.

GREAT READ!!!!!

Great read! I loved this book as well as her others. I don't know why some people wouldn't like this book because of "grammar" run on sentences etc. Yes because THAT'S why I read the books because of grammar(sarcasm) incase in was hard to miss! I could completely keep up with the characters. I had no problem at all. Love scence's weren't clumsy but just as hot as all her other love scenes. Let me tell you if you had a problem with those scenes because of grammar you have more problems than not liking a book! Thanks for another great read!!!!!!!

Brody by Joyee Flynn is the eighth book in the Resistant Omegas series.

Brody was sold to the dire wolf pack at the age of six and he was the first of fifteen Omegas who were held there until they were freed by the members of the Omega Network. Omegas had been sold to the highest bidder and used to give their inner circle power without anyone to help them until the Omega Network was set up. Brody had his omega powers activated as a child when his alpha sexually abused him. He did everything he could to protect the younger children, even if that meant taking their place in the alphas bed.

Tristan, an omega, is captured by the Wolf Council for questioning and the Omegas fear that the past may be repeating itself. Hundreds of years ago, Omegas were killed by their inner circles because they were frightened of the powers they were gaining. Wesley, the strongest Omega, goes to Lord Ellys, an ancient vampire, to go to the council to testify about the atrocities committed against the Omegas, since he had been alive at the time. As Wesley and the Omegas start the task of assessing the council members to ensure they were the correct individuals to be there, Brody's powers begin to spiral out of control. Brody meets Leif and Asher, two Beta candidates, and immediately feels connected to them. While struggling with his feelings for them, Jaxon, an alpha, arrives to be tested and instantly falls for Brody. Now Brody has the inner circle he never wanted, but desperately needs to ground his abilities. Can Brody overcome the trauma he endured and look towards a better and brighter future?

I was taken by surprise by the way this book started. I knew that this confrontation would occur at some time, but the way it unfolded took my breath away. It was horrifying the way the Omegas and the Vampires were almost exterminated hundreds of years ago, but Lord Ellys' willingness to assist them in anyway showed that it was time to set the record straight. As Brody's past was revealed, it was easy to understand his hesitancy to trust Leif, Asher and Jaxon. It was sad how he felt that he was to blame for the abuse the other children with him took, when in reality he shielded them as much as he could, figuring he wasn't much older than they were at the time. As the powers of the Omegas increase, it was easy to understand why others would be afraid, except that all they wanted was to live in peace with their mates. Someone brought up the point that maybe there was something or someone that forced the inner circles to kill their Omegas hundreds of years ago, but no one knows. That is one question to the many secrets about the Omegas that has yet to be revealed.

Why do I keep reading these?

It's not a novel, it's a wordy short story. Characters are cardboard cutouts with almost nothing to identify them from one another. The sex is clumsy and formulaic, the plot half-baffling and half-boring, the dialogue wooden and stilted. Maybe the author has to write a certain number of these to fulfil a contract? Regardless, this took me all of 40 minutes to read, and I'm annoyed I devoted even that much time to this mess.
And I even LIKE gay werewolf porn, too.
